Before we test the hard drive we will run a quick disc check

Could you follow the instructions on this page and let me know if there is any change http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=102348

Hi

Wow that was quick and I mean 2 seconds quick, once I got to the "Checking file system on C:", yeah, 2 seconds and said it was clean.  Normally when I do a check disk it takes a while.

By the time I got into the desktop after a 2-tick noise, everything loaded in about 1 and 1/2 minutes and accessing any icons on desktop and/or opening any through "my computer" fine.  The only issues is when I went through "my computer" and clicked folders to open "Windows/System32" folder, all the icons did not load.  Some that did not load are:

Mouse icon, a ton of NLS files, JPEG32.QTC file, ACM files, AX file, TLB file, others too.  Also what's a swlsrv32.rll file?  All these icons look like;  a piece of paper with the top right corner of it folded over and inside of that is a box with red, black(?), and blue symbols of some sort.

The other issue is when scrolling down or up, periodically hesitates (dog w/wagging tail).

Thank you

OK lets remove my tools now and see what that does

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Tina Jo\Local Settings\Application Data\Iconcache.db

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
     [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article and this article.
I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

Hi

So what all the commotion was, was this Java.  I did not see it in my Control Panel, which I have seen it there before, so I will not install Java anymore, only enable in browsers if needed.

I am on my way to return your tools you borrowed to me and then get cracking on some education. Of course not nearly as close to your expertise.

Thank you very much,
God Bless
