Better idea lets re-install system restore

Enable hidden and system files in Explorer if you haven't done so already. To do this, open Control Panel | Folder Options | View, and in Advanced Settings under Hidden Files and Folders, select "Show hidden files and folders," Below that, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files." (You will probably want to restore this option later.)

From Start | Run, type %SystemRoot%\inf and press Enter.
Find the file named sr.inf. Right click on it and select Install.
You may be prompted for your Windows installation media, or a directory on your hard drive that has the \i386 folder. If you installed Service Pack 2 (as opposed to installing a version of Windows XP with SP2 preinstalled), use the folder %SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles\i386 .

Let me know how that goes - it should take no more than 10 minutes

Still the same.  Ran it ok with the sr.sys file from the C:\ drive SP3 update.

Tried reinstalling the SP3 update too but that didn't work either.  Not uninstalled then reinstalled afresh though.

Not uninstalled and reinstalled SP3 yet but I've fixed the problems with System Restore and Windows Update via IE8 with the following link where I reregistered Jscript.dll

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430

Now only problem I have is the file search still isn't working in File Explorer.

OK this is a tad more complex - to recap when you try to search nothing happens at all ?

What did you do to clear the problem ?

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL again and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.  MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT.  But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe

What did you do to clear the problem ?

The Windows file search?  There was an update on Windows Updates to v4 of the file search (don't know what version I was running before).  After I had run this update the search worked again.

Thanks again for your help I'll run through all the tasks you recommend and report back if I have any further problems.
