Mail problem with 4.5.523
« on: November 15, 2004, 01:10:35 PM »
Since the update to 4.5, I can't download mail. I've changed my mial settings from the precious 127.0.0.1 to the correct pop server but no mail comes through. My mail client (Mozilla Thunderbird) informs me I'm connected but nothing happens. The Ashmaisv.exe process runs and the icon for it comes up, my cpu goes to 100% usage and even when I shut down th mail client, ashmaisv.exe keeps running and taking up memory.
I have to either use task manager and end process or terminate the mail scanner provider to get it to stop as it doesn't timeout.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to what to do?

Just to add, when I hover the mouse over the Ashmaisv icon in the toolbar, rather than giving a pop address it gives a recurring IP address. Oh and in the above message that should have said previous 127.0.0.1, not 'precious', oops.

What do you mean, recurring address?

What version of Windows are you running ? More info would be greatly appreciated  ;) 'cause if you're still running Windows 98 or 98SE, 127.0.0.1 shouldn't be changed...

What do you mean, recurring address?

The same IP address repeated constantly seperated by a comma.

I'm using Windows XP

I have to go to work now, I'll check back on the replies later. Thanks for the prompt responses and I hope the problem can be resolved as I've been really impressed with Avast so far.

please add the following line to file Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini under [MailScanner]:
Log=20
Then let the problem occur again and after you terminate the mail scanner, send me the log file Avast4\DATA\log\aswMaiSv.log by email.
Thank you.

I experience the same problems with Pegasus 4.21c only smal mails come through (smaller than 10kb) if they are larger it shows connected to ip xxx but nothing happens. I tried 127.0.01 as well as normal configuration with pop.provider.com but the same error as you mention occurs. Any suggestions? See also my Pegasus Mail thread

OK I'll try, but the file is almost 1mb in size! The majority of which is massive swathes of --XXX Sleep, repeated. We'll see whether it lets me snd mail as well.

Nope, it won't let me send mail either (no smtp connection).

I switched off the Mail scanner and was able to send the mail as requested. With it switched on the problems simply persist.

I note that the mail wizard still thinks that the way to get avast to scan your mail is to change your server settings to 127.0.0.1. Couldn't it be set to do it one way for non-XP/Win2000 OS's and if you have XP or 2000 it sets the mail scanner to transparent. As it stands it doesn't look like it does that.

I am also having a problem since the update just prior to 4.5.523. I was hoping the 4.5.523 update fixed the it.

I am running Mozilla Thunderbird on Windows 2000. When the email client tries to contact the mail server I get the message "Could not connect to server 127.0.0.1; the connection was refused".

Hope this helps solve the problem as I really need to get my email.

OK guys, have you ever tried to change server names from 127.0.0.1 to their original names given to you by your ISP ? Try that and see what happens...

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 (all updates) and it worked without any problems. My mail protection wizard has disappeared from Start/avast menu, and all server names are back to normal...

That seems to have solved the problem. I do miss the system tray icon popping up to indicate email was being scanned. It made me feel better to see something happening.

Thanks for the help!!

rlynn, just my curiosity - can you post the contents of the [MailScanner] section of your <avast>\data\avast4.ini file?

Thanks
