Mouse Pads for $60 dollar - Does it matter?

I have been hearing a lot about Razer Gaming Mouse Pads lately. I was wondering if its worth it?

Iv got a black felt neoprene portable pad from JB HiFi for $5 and it work great, $60 for a mouse pad is ridiculess - there just praying on noobs and the feeble minded who think that they'll get a better gaming experience because they paid 60 bucks so it must be better

As long as the pad is none reflective and not to much grip there as good as any other.

For US$ 60 I would want a good mouse thrown in.

Seriously though I have a black neoprene style mouse mat with a cloth surface on one side and I bought two for less than $5 including postage and it works just fine with my Logitec MX Performance mouse.

One thing that will cost much less than $60 and probably give a better bang for your buck, would be PTFE Teflon mouse pads to stick on to the contact points of your mouse. If you search there are many products out there for specific mice, so you don't have to cut them to shape for your mouse.

Me I bought some PTFE Teflon tape and cut mine to size, this is cheaper than those cut for specific mice and it should be enough for a few mice (or changes on a single mouse).

The same here  I just use a 5$ mouse with my Logitech mouse. I used to keep a book under the mouse till recently though since I was a bit lazy to buy a mouse pad since it worked well on the book. I even played Battle Field 3 on the book

Since I use an optical mouse I've found a mouse pad to be a needless investment. There is not a "ball" to protect.

Looks like a bit of a copy of the R.A.T series gaming mice: http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/rat7.htm

But $60 for a mouse pad, that's just over the top. I paid $20 (New Zealand dollars) for mine. It's lasted 3 years now and I'm happy with it. But I have a R.A.T 7 mouse to go with it. Would I spend that much again? Maybe.

Well for years I used to use my desk surface with my wireless laser mice, but the surface gets dirty and can get sticky, so my concern wasn't a ball clogging but the smooth movement of the mouse. This combined with the PTFE Teflon mouse pads it is pretty damn slick.

I didn't think any mouse had balls anymore ( sorry Speedy, im sure if you look down your's are still there ) even the wired ones are optical, the pad for me! is purely to stop the desk or any other surface from being scratched and a more precise movement.

I've been using optical mice (wired, USB) for quite a while, usually the cheapest I can find so I can afford to keep spares on hand, and I sure don't miss having to clean the rollers frequently (very dusty here, plus I'm a smoker).  I've found that they tend to vary considerably as to what kind of surface they're happiest and most reliable with.

My desk-top (desk, not computer) has a varnished surface with a very faint wood-grain pattern, and most opticals aren't happy with that at all.  My son taught me the trick of taping down a few sheets of plain white paper which usually does the trick, but my current mouse doesn't like that and is happiest, surprisingly, with an old-fashioned plain mouse pad.

My only real objection to what's happened with the evolution of mice is the switch from PS/2 to USB ports.  I'm not hurting for those ports (3 USB-1 and 1 USB-2), but while they too are in the back, the old PS/2 ports are much easier to access since they used to be the standard for keyboards and mice.  (Or if you're old enough, you might even remember the mouse going into a comm port.)

My Logitech Laser mouse doesn't scratch the desk at all not one still scratch, all I do is buy a laser mouse that has a better surface protection that doesn't scratch the desk and it easy to clean (I don't mean my bare backside near my tail ).

My mouse gets a hard life, it is forced to run back and forth for hours and many miles each day for no reward; it gets no food, unless there are any crumbs in his path; gets squeezed a lot and has his buttons pushed all the time. So my sweaty hands are the least of his worries, when I have worn him out, no retirement home for him, just discarded into my junk box
