High memory usage
« on: August 01, 2012, 10:59:22 AM »
Hi,

I've only recently noticed how much memory the avast! 4.8 server client uses. The main culprits are aswServ.exe (175 mb) and aswWebSv.exe (124 mb). On a 32 bit server (MS Windows Server 2003 Standard Adition) with 4 GB (read maximum) of RAM, with SQL Server 2005 installed (which grabs close to 2 GB for itself, and which I do not want to force a memory usage reduction...).

Is it possible to reduce the memory usage of the 2 avast! services mentioned above? Our license expires in December (2012), and I will be upgrading to the latest version. How memory "hungry" is this version - or put in another way, should the newest version use more or less memory?

Regards,

OrionVII

The memory usage gets (temporarily) increased when something is being scanned (because the files to be scanned are loaded into memory).

Generally, new versions of the program should use less memory.

The real problem here is SQL.  How much memory does SQL use? ALL! (per Mark, my SQL Engineer).  A 64 bit OS and more RAM is the real solution here.  The avast! usage is nothing, compared to SQL.
