avast 4.5 home, thunderbird 1 & poptray 3.0.3
« on: January 10, 2005, 01:58:35 PM »
Hi there,

I´ve just installed the home version of avast 4.5. I´ve read a lot about this virus scanner and learned it´s working almost perfectly with thunderbird. But now I have run into some trouble:

After the installation Thunderbird is not able to connect to my mailboxes any more. I haven´t changed any settings so far because someone mentioned that avast will configure itself to run with TB. The funny thing is that poptray is able to get the new mail. I´ve done a search for TB & avast but that didn´t produce usefull results. Any ideas?

Thanks and cheers.

PopTray is not the problem, it receives my mail which is checked by avast. The problem seem to be Thunderbird. I´ve followed almost every hint from the forum (localhost, modify the avast.ini,...) but TB only receives and sends when I disable the internet mail provider. When using the localhost I get a "can´t connect to 127.0.0.1) message.

Now after I set my firewall to fully trust Thunderbird, it works.  :)

Welcome to forums...
Are you using Windows XP or 98\Me?
avast! works with multiple smtp/pop servers and can protect as many pop3/smtp server accounts as you want:

With 98\Me:

1. Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
2. If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
3. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
4. Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
(even the ones created in the future).
5. Configure your email accounts to use avast! as antivirus.

With XP:

With Windows 2k\XP, avast 4.5 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Can you make a try and see if it's ok? Thanks.
New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings  ;)

Edit: Glad that you solve it... It took me a long time to write this and I have to leave... So, you were faster  :-[ :-\
