Windows Update August 15 - turn Avast off?
« on: August 15, 2012, 10:57:19 AM »
Just tried to do a Windows update and it all failed.  Tried three times so far.
~error during the configuration stage; it make it to 15%.

"Failure Configuring Windows Updates
Reverting Changes
Do not turn off your computer"

Using Dell 546 Home Premium Windows 7 SP1 64bit AMD

All the other updates went OK before today.

Do I need to turn Avast off? version 7.0.1456

OK, please try this...

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus Beta: http://files.avast.com/test5beta/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.
5. Wait 10 minutes.
6. Retry to run Windows/MS update.

I understand the importance of testing beta's 'in the field' but is it not a little bit premature to recommend this beta version for a problem which should be easily solved by either switching the shields off or, failing that, doing a 'repair' on the OP's current version of Avast? - Reading the 'Beta' forum the latest one still has its fair share of problems.

I must be missing something as the OP's problem refers to Windows update, not the Avast ones. Hasn't the beta introduced some new problems? Perhaps I'm wrong.

There isn't any reason to disable avast! regardless of the version being used.
It would certainly be helpful to see a screenshot of the actual error code generated
by Microsoft when the Windows Update fails.

I had 8 this morning it may be different for others depending on OS and additional MS programs running.

Guess, you are. ;)

The beta version is available where this problem is fixed; since there are only bugfixes there and no new features, it's pretty safe to install it.

Downloading the updates went OK, when restarting to finish them, it gets to 15% and reports failed, rolls back to the previous set up. Just tried on my 32bit laptop and that went OK, maybe just a 64 bit problem?
Here's a screen shot from this morning.

I did a search before posting here and only found one other person with this problem so far.
http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-393983?tag=discussion-thread

It was suggested to only do a few at a time, not all 19 at once. Tried Microsoft Fixit 50123.msi as that was MS fix for the first failure; didn't work.

Haven't tried the beta yet, hoping for someone else with the same problem to post here.

Thanks for the help so far.

OK, that was a slog. Had to install every one of them separately in order for them to go in.

I always look forward to a new version of Avast but in this case I think it's Microsoft's fault.

I'll leave the one remaining optional update for the mouse until I'm feeling braver. ;)

Best regards
