ad supported apps
« on: September 14, 2012, 01:43:56 PM »
I noticed that AMS passed a few ad-supported apps while others like DrWeb, AVL and TrustGO detected these apps. Does AMS plan to add these ad networks to its database?
thx

Hi,

yeah, but those are not malware, just annoying advertisements. We are certainly not going to detect those the same way we detect malware, but we might come with something different in the future since we know users would like to get informed about such apps, we'll see how things go.

It might be an idea to offer to block these via the firewall (if it is usable) on detection?

Hi,

I'm afraid I have to tell you that this definitely won't be before Christmas.

Well, why not discuss before? ;)

I've tested 3 or 4 applications that scan for ads applications.
Lookout Ad Network Detector (with the ability to load Apps manager to uninstall): -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout.addetector
AppBrain Ad Detector: -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.detector (well, it seems to have ads also...)
TrustGo Detector: -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trustgo.addetector
A little complicated and complex: Addons Detector -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector

AirPush Detector (does more or less nothing in my phone with AdAway): -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brosmike.airpushdetector
The same for Airblocker - Blockade Airpush -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.byq.airblocker
And Airpush Permanent Opt out: -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airpush.optoutapp

To block, the better for me is AdAway (root) -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adaway
It's much better than AdFree Android in my opinion: -https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigtincan.android.adfree

Tech, AdAway is excellent, I use it, but are you sure it'll block Air Push ads which come bundled in an application which looks safe to Avast when said application runs?

Well, I'm not an Android technician. I have ~150 apps installed in my phone. And probably tested more than 500...
I do not see any Air push ads with the use of AdAway. Am I lucky or it works? ???

I've run a Lookout scanning. Indeed, I have 33 apps with AdMob but none with Air Push indeed...
