Hi, I seem to be having a similar issue to that several others have posted here.  I am attaching my logs (could not get aswMBR to run for some reason).  Please let me know any action I can take to remedy the situation.

Thank you,
S.P. Gass

Do these mainly occur with Firefox ?

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:OTL
[2012/04/08 08:49:14 | 000,000,000 | ---D | M] (IMinent Toolbar) -- C:\Documents and Settings\Gass\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\9v9ioz01.default\extensions\{C9B68337-E93A-44EA-94DC-CB300EC06444}
[2012/09/20 21:11:55 | 000,000,000 | RHSD | C] -- C:\comment.htt
[2012/09/20 21:11:55 | 000,000,000 | RHSD | C] -- C:\autorun.inf
[2012/09/20 20:41:56 | 000,000,002 | RHS- | M] () -- C:\WINDOWS\winstart.bat

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

I primarily used Firefox, but unistalled it with this problem.  The issue also occurs with Safari and Chrome.  Avast has identified rootkits, but after rebooting, the problem persists.  The issue appears to remain at present.  I ran the fix and am attaching the results of the Quick Scan.  Thank you for your support.

Could you take a screenshot of the alerts please

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application

  • Then click on Change parameters.

  • Check the boxes beside Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.

  • Click the Start Scan button.

  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

  • Get the report by selecting Reports

  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

Thanks, I downloaded the executable, but can't get it to run (tried double-clicking and running from the cmd line).  Is there a way into safe mode on XP to get it to run?  Or is there something else I can try?  Thanks again.

Yes download it again but  do not   delete the old copy from the desktop
Then run the fresh copy

If that fails do you have access to a USB of at least 1gb

Additional download attempts ended with the same result.  Right clicking on the file has an "Open" option which does nothing and a "Run as" option.  Run as "Current User" doesn't do anything, but there is another choice to run as "The following user" which lists "APNS certificate" as a choice.  I haven't tried that yet.

I do have a usb connection and a 16 GB usb flash drive.

Thanks,

OK first we will get the recovery console installed as we will need that

***************************************************

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Scroll down to Step 1, and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. Download the file & save it as it's originally named.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'No' to run the full ComboFix scan.

THEN

Download this programme to the USB
Listparts

Reboot the computer and repeatedly press F8
At the menu select recovery console
At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter.
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\listparts.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to open.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (results.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

I followed the directions, but the combofix didn't give me the same prompts as you listed.  A prompt requested that I turn off Avast and then it started running a scan that it said would take 10 minutes (double if computer heavily infected).  I went out and came home and after 2 hours, it appeared to be hung up.  I tried accessing the Recovery Console on boot, but it did not come up.  I actually have an XP CD so I accessed the recovery console using that, but was unsuccessful in launching Notepad or the program on the usb drive.

I did run the program after rebooting the computer (not from recovery console).  The log is attached.  Further guidance will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

SP Gass

    Please open notepad
    (Start =>All Programs => Accessories => Notepad)
and copy the entire contents of the code box below.
(To do this highlight the contents of the box, right click on it and select copy.)
Right-click in the open notepad and select Paste.

Code: [Select]
Disk=0 Partition=2 active

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.
    • Save it on to a USB flashdrive as fix.txt along with listparts.exe
    • Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.
    • Enter Recovery console.
    • Run e:\listparts (32bit) and press Enter
    • The tool will start to run.
    • Press Fix button.
    • When it is done close the notification pop up. Click Scan and copy and paste the log (Result.txt) it makes on the flash drive.

The computer appears to stall when Entering Recovery Console.  I ran the fix from regular Windows mode.  Log attached.

    Thanks.

Thank you - the report output is attached.  By the way, I had to download the tool to the usb drive and rename to get it to run.  Rebooting now.

OK re-run TDSSKiller now with the same parameters
When you get to this select delete :

    \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System )

Avast will alert as the files are moved

Then could you run combofix and let me know what problems remain on completion

TDSSKiller didn't show anything to delete (screenshot attached).  Combofix ran and the log is attached.  In other news, the computer appears to be running normally now.  Thank you very much for your support!
