Avast! crashes on shutdown

I use avast! Home Edition 4.5.561. Almost every time I turn off my PC avast! crashes (at first aswUpdSv, then ashServ). OS: WinXP SP2.
Any ideas? Thank you for your help!

What version of avast?

Have you tried a repair of avast. (Control panel>Add/Change programs>Avast>Change>repair)

Are there any files in the <avast>\data\log folder, with the name of the form unpXXXX, where XXXX is a number?
If so, can you send them to my email address?

Hmm, this particular file seems to be of no use - most of its contents is missing, This is most likely caused by the fact that it was generated during system shutdown and the OS abruptly closed the reporting process before it had the chance to flush the relevant data to the disk... :-\

That's pretty much what I figured.  This is not a new thing - it's been doing this for at least three point revisions now.

But why on earth it doesn't replicate on any of our machines? We have tens of XP machines here, and are absolutely unable to simulate it.

Roj, for you, it's only ashServ.exe or also aswUpdSv.exe that's crashing? And does it happen on each and every shutdown?

Could it be connected to the network environment maybe? I mean, standalone computers might have different speed and order of shutdown than computers in a local network / domain... ?

Thanks for the very prompt reply.

OK, I'll provide some additional info from two questions here.

First off I'm running XP-SP1a on three machines on my network here at home.  The network environment is straight Workgroup p2p MS networking over TCP/IP, nothing extra.

As far as I know it's only ashServ.exe that's crashing and it does NOT happen on every shutdown.  It has happened several times but appears to be quite sporadic.

I'll also try to give more info on my system.
So, I use WinXP SP2 (English version), there is only one network connection (that's my cable modem), and I use built-in WinXP SP2 firewall. That's all.
Avast crashes on every second shutdown, sometimes even on every shutdown.

Good news guys

I'm 99% sure we've found (and fixed) the problem. There's a beta refresh coming out tomorrow and I'd like to ask everyone experiencing the shutdown crashes to try it.


Luckily, we've been able to catch the event in a debugger - and actually understood what what was causing it. Cool!
