Nothing is ever easy!  When I click on the link above and then click on the link Check your system for the latest updates Firefox closes .  So this doesn't appear to be an option.

It requires an active x control so you will need to do it in IE

Hi essexboy & mcchain,

YOU GUYS ABOLUTELY ROCK!!!  SUCCESS, finally.  I'm sure glad I didn't move on and forget AIS as everyone around me was suggesting (of course they were sick of listening to me about Avast, lol).

I didn't have success at the link supplied but I did google update for my driver and downloaded an update for Windows 8.  I checked my device manager which then said I had the latest driver for my network adapters.  So I went back to AIS installed it and it WORKS WITH FIREWALL INSTALLED, browser protection and safezone work!!

I did end up having to download a generic driver but led there by Intel.

Thanks for sticking with me and helping me through this ordeal.  I am truly grateful for all your help.

Cheers,
Janice

That was short lived, :'( but it did work, I opened and closed my browser any number of times, the problem happened after I had to restart after uninstalling Norton.  I am going to go into my devices and update all that need updating and try again.  I am truly obsessed now since it did work, lol!

Its Black Friday here, due to Thanksgiving in the States so I am going to go out and spend my money, that'll definitely make me feel better, lol ;D.  After that I'll be ready to tackle this again.

Cheers,
Janice

I have installed the free Avast and have no problems whatsoever.  So I'll run this til I decide what to do next.

OK next trick is to remove all of Norton, it uses the old NDIS drivers and may have left some remnants behind or more to the point replaced the driver with the old one

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=kb20080710133834EN_EndUserProfile_en_us&product=home&pvid=f-home&version=1&lg=en&ct=us

This is the Norton uninstall tool link
Run this
Then ensure that the driver was replaced to the version that worked
Uninstall Avast
Run aswClear
Re-install AIS

SUCCESS!! :D :D  I hope.  The only problem now will be if it crashes my computer.  After a bit the free Avast did crash my computer.  I have now installed the patch essexboy posted a bit back so hopefully that works!

Thanks a million, you are the greatest!!!

Janice

Nope didn't work again.  Sometime through the night my computer crashed and same story, I'm connected to the internet but can't browse, message  problem loading page in browsers.  I reinstalled update to network driver, but same thing.  So I have uninstalled AIS and hesitate to put free Avast on because of the constant crashes I experience while using Avast.  I installed the patch but it doesn't help.

I'm guessing we're out of suggestions of what more I can try?  For whatever reason this is just not going to work.

Cheers,
Janice

You know that network card update got it to work so I would think those having problems after upgrading to 8 may need to find an update as well.  That part I get but why does it stop working after a reboot?  I put it back on last night, opened & closed my browsers many many times and it worked......I don't get it!

Cheers,
Janice

Could you temporarily disable network shield and see if that makes a difference

OK let me join the bandwagon..  Avast blocked my net connection

The problem is that the NDIS filters had become corrupted.. I had four in my device manager !
Uninstalled Avast
Uninstalled all the NDIS filters
Repaired my network connection
Re-installed Avast
Device manager  has 3 Avast NDIS filters all nicely hidden as they should be

So that may well be where the problem lies
I have been running Avast and 8 now for 3 weeks with nary a problem
Unable at this stage to determine what caused the corruption
