Okay all was hidden.  I'm going to give this a rest for a day or so and try again, if nothing else I'm a total optimist!

I had to uninstall Avast as it just keeps crashing my computer.  What is it with my system that I can't run Avast???  All of these problems started after the virus way back when and I would have thought by wiping my computer clean and starting all over again that this problem would have been gone.  I just don't get it!!  Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
Janice

Were the crashes with the original posted patch installed ?

Just found this one

Hallo

I have prepared new version of the aswnseng.dll with one fix which may solve the problem.

Please try it, and report results.

How to install the fix:

1. Download it from here http://public.avast.com/~polach/aswnseng_01.zip and unpack it.

2. Disable the Self Defense in the Avast!. Go to the Settings->Troubleshooting and uncheck enable avast! self defense module

3. Stop the Avast! service. Go to the Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Then locate the avast! Antivirus service ans stop it.

4. Replace the aswnseng.dlll in c:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast or where you have Avast! installed. You will need adminstrative rights to do that

5. Start the avast! service again in Services list

6. Enable Web Shield if is disabled.

Provide tests and report results.

Thank you.

A patch has been made as a temporary solution, which is also meant to help the Avast! team resolve the issue for the next update. Please update to the latest version of Avast! available, and then follow the instructions found here:
http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/

(See the one titled "aswnet patch: Patch for aswNet.sys, BlueScreen in NETIO.SYS on Windows8")

Yes I believe so.  The blue screen did give the reason as supplied by aswnetlog or whatever the patch was.  I'm going on memory here as its all gone but I will definitely try this fix.

Okay, I put AIS back on without the firewall, will just go with Windows firewall for now.  Things seem better, only crashed once since last night but having a problem replacing the aswneng.dll file.  I ran as administrator (did the cmd - net user administrator active:yes) but I can only get as far as "replace the existing file" I say yes and then tells me I need admininstrator rights.  I just can't seem to get passed this.  W#hen  I did the cmd promt I never changed it back to "/ acitve no" so don't understand why it keeps blocking me.  Any ideas?

Cheers,
Janice

An alternative would be to rename the original file to . old and then copy the new one over

Nope, file access denied so i can't rename the file and I can't move the downloaded file to that folder.

Man, I own this computer, how come I can be stopped from doing what I want with my folders & files, good, bad or indifferent which I might add I installed in the first place.  That's my rant for the day!!

Cheers,
Janice

Success!!  Did a little research on this and all you have to do when access is denied is do it in safe mode, I did that and it did work.  So hopefully no more crashes, at this point they are few and far between so replacing this file with this patch should work I hope.

Janice
