Nope you can select partitions when you load 8.  I did have three partitions but when I installed 8 I set it to four partitions
You will need to select Custom install
Quote
The Custom choice lets you create a new partition and a multi-boot setup, so you can keep your old version of Windows and choose between it and Windows 8 at system startup. You'll also need to choose Custom if your PC is running an outdated operating system like Windows XP or if the disk contains no OS at all. Disk options in the Custom install setup path let you delete and format drive partitions.

Hi essexboy,

Thanks and so do I install Windows 8 Pro before I go online for first time?  I'm assuming I do so that I will have defender running while I install AIS.

Cheers,
Janice

Yes Defender will protect you whilst you get AIS, then once it is installed Defender will turn itself off

Nice, glad you like it.  I have my two granddaughters here at the moment but once they are gone I plan to take care of business!  I have Windows 8 Pro so we shall see how that plays out.

Cheers,
Janice

essexboy,

Can you believe this,  I have reformatted my computer, and I still can't use Avast!!!!  I get the same error messages as before, can't connect to the server blah, blah blah.  I'm not a happy camper.  I have Windows 8 installed and still the same thing.  What is it.  I'm going to try again, this time without the firewall and see if I can use it.

Cheers,
Janice

No i selected the default work network.  My computer keeps crashing as well once I put AIS back on. Before I installed AIS I didn't have any problems.   I called my computer guru (he used to build my computers for me, this is the first one he didn't do) and he told me the virus is hidden in a sector of my computer and that I now need to format from dos.  I really think that this is correct because I have had nothing but problems since that virus in April.  I am going to now research how to format using Windows 8 disc and removing all partitions.  I do now that I have to go into the BIOS but first have to make sure I can do this with the Windows 8 disc.  I formatted with the Recovery discs.

Cheers,
Janice

We can quickly check that out using TDSSKiller  if you wish

From the windows 8 installation screen you can delete and reformat all partitions

OK lets run it

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application

  • Then click on Change parameters.

  • Check the boxes beside Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.

  • Click the Start Scan button.

  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
  • Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

  • Get the report by selecting Reports

  • Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

No threats found!  Now I'm really frustrated.  The file is way too large to copy & paste here, is there something else I can do or should I copy & paste in pieces.  My computer crashed just prior to running this.

Cheers,
Janice
