My PC froze
« on: February 22, 2013, 07:11:18 PM »
Hello!

My PC (Windows 7, laptop) froze yesterday, just out of the blue. The PC was in idle state, except for Winamp (a song was playing). It froze on the 14th second of the song. The PC is in perfect shape, no malware, no anomalies. So, the PC froze and nothing helped, no Ctrl+Alt+Del, nothing. I had to reset it manually. There was no BSOD, so there is no minidump. Is there a way to see what caused this? Like a log file of some sort or anything?

Thank you!
Intel Core i7 Q 740 @ 1.73 GHz, 6 GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1, Avast! Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free version) and Sandboxie (paid version).

Is this the first time this has happened ?

If you haven't changed anything (installation/update, etc.) just reboot and monitor, not much point in chasing first instances of anything.

Since there was no BSOD little in the way of information is available to you, no minidumps or memory.dmp. You could check the windows event log viewer and see if there is anything with the rough time and date the freeze happened.

Freezes can often be associated with overheating, monitor your CPU and graphics temperatures.

Are you running two Avs at the same time?

Is your drivers updated?

Try doing a mem test.

and check the system integrity.

Open Command Prompt as an administrator, type the following command and then press Enter.

sfc /scannow

All of the above, including my suggestions take time, unless this is a recurring issue then I wouldn't do anything on the first instance of this and why I asked.

The OPs signature says Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 unless its out of date. But it is still chasing ghosts if it is a first time issue and what to repair if you don't know what is responsible.

My stupidity for not checking first....  :-[

Unless it's something that happens often, I wouldn't do anything.

Thank you all for your responses. This was the first time this happened so I'll do as David suggests - I won't do a thing. But if it happens again, I'll be sure to check eveerything you guys mentioned. Again, thank you.

I have been thinking if this process of complete refresh is really good. Suppose if its a pc full of malware, can these malware be present after a complete refresh?

That pretty much depends on the Malware and the option you choose.

Why does everyone quote the whole post including images when the quote reference will take anyone back to the images in the original post.
