"% Is Not A Valid Win 32 Application"
« on: February 27, 2005, 06:24:14 PM »
I had Firefox 1.0 and then decided to install 1.0.1 over it.

All was well. Then I found that both versions were still on the PC, so decided to uninstall them in safe mode, did a reg.cleanup and tried to do a clean install of 1.0.1

I got the above message in an error box headed 7.Zip. I tried the download on 2 sites, Tinyurl and the official Mozilla page, both with same result.

Is my machine infected? Or can anyone tell me what has happened, remembering I am not the sharpest technical tool in the box!

Please help me!

Could be a bad download. Delete all temporary files (cookies, temp files, downloaded prog. files etc) and try again.

Mozilla - Firefox doesn't recomend installing over the top of the old version, rather uninstal old version, install new.

You may have messed and settings left behind, e.g. 'C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox' you may have to clean that out too and start fresh?

Its also best not to uninstall things in safe mode, you may also want to make sure there in is none of firefox left in Add/Remove programs.

Also try downloading a new install file for firefox.

I have searched all C and D drive..nothing left of Firefox.

I have tried to do a clean install...same result.

Decided to try to download/install an entirely different programme called "Diagnose".

Same old thing...I can download but not install. When I click on run, this time the error message was:

Error 193:

"Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Set up aborted. Error 193"

There is something wrong, somewhere.

I can do everything but intall any new downloaded programme.

That is it in a nutshell.

Please keep helping me!!

Are you sure you have administrator rights on that account?

I am sure I do...My grandson set up my PC as the main one, with me, my hisband and grandson having accounts. Husband and I are on a wireless network. Grandson is hardly ever here, only twice a year.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Did you run a full scan with avast! including the archive files?
Did you run antispyware applications to see if you have any change in your system?

To be sure, run it (or unzip it) from your own desktop.

When you start an on-demand scanning (clicking on the icons of the Hard Disks or Folder Selection for instance) you'll see the slider of the Thorough Scan and the option for scanning archives...

All now well.

Finally, tonight I managed to get my PC back to normal..it is nearly midnight and I must get to bed for a decent sleep.

Thanks for the support!
