Updates will not load automatically or manually.
« on: July 23, 2012, 02:47:40 PM »
I can not get the newest update to load.  It only remains in the start position but, it never loads.  I tried reloading Avast.  It still will not load.  How can I get around this problem.

For the past two weeks I too have been having a problem with the definitions update (both auto and manual). The normal updating slow down will take place then I will usually get the message "access denied." I am using free version 4.8 (old I know).
Any ideas on the update problem? Thanks.

Your problem is somewhat different to the above issue as it isn't for the current/recent version/s of avast.

Can you be a little more specific on this error as "access denied" isn't something I'm familiar with in relation to updates. A screen shot of the error window might help.

Support for avast 4.8 really is on its last legs, there have been several end of support dates, which somehow have got extended, the last was the end of last year. Now we are almost in to March/Spring 2013 and I don't know if that support (virus definitions) is still running.

What is your operating system (win2k, XP and later) ?
If it can use later versions of avast you should do so as there are very few people in the forums that have even used 4.8 much less remember its settings.

Poor choice of date, never schedule anything for 1st of April, people will think it is an April fools prank.

You're right, better should have said until end of first quarter 2013. ;)

DavidR;
Thanks for the response. The message I get is in a small pop-up window. Sorry can't update to a newer V as the V4.8 is used on a Win98 (you read that right) machine. 'Guess I am just out of luck.

Yes, you aren't alone there are still other win98 users out there.

Unfortunately this has been coming for some time. Avast support for win98 was meant to end years ago, but because business systems were still using avast 4.8 effectively win98 systems got a consequential stay of execution. But business systems have had avast 6 offered for some considerable time and another new update for them also so they have planned to phase out support for avast 4.8. Effectively it is do drop the need to have two different virus definition update streams.

hi can any body tell me that in manual updates do i have to download the avast antivirus data base approximately Mb each time when i desire to update the antivirus data base or there is any other method exist regarding the latest updates downloading and installing them manually instead of downloading 75 mb files each time.

No the manual update from the avastUI (User Interface) does an incremental update, the full database manual download is different, it is 76.9MB currently.

Why aren't you using the Auto Update for virus definitions as that is incremental, is done automatically and is usually measured in KBs rather than MBs ?
