Why do people care so much about the interface? I have my avast configures so it would not bother me as much as possible. Shouldn't that be the purpose of such a program, to protect you but not interfere with your work, a silent guardian, a watchful protector(The Dark Knight anybody?). Spending too much time in the program's interface usually means something is not right. Why would you care how it looks since you shouldn't be looking at it in the first place?(At least not for long periods of time). As long as it's easy to find the settings, component or whatever you need it shouldn't be such a big deal.

If I wasn't helping out on the forums, then my forays into the UI (doing screenshots) would be few and far between. I don't particularly like the Tiled home page and I don't like the white colour in the free version (hurts my eyes), but that pales (excuse pun) into insignificance against the protection provided.

I have always been a function over form advocate and in my time I have had some pretty awful GUIs (not I might say from avast), my MailWasher anti-spam and Outpost Firewall Pro (still using 7,5 version) have been showered in a bucket load of bland.  But the time spent there Vs the function/protection given is far outweighs the bland interface.

Except for rare occasions, the UI is hardly ever seen.
The notifications to let you know about updates or viruses blocked etc,
are what most of us see quite often.
If someone complained about  the looks of these notices, it's understandable.
User Interface, who really cares, it's hardly ever looked at except in screenshots or,
when you first install avast!. :)

Yes I do like v8 BUT only after overcoming difficulties with installing v8.  With Windows XP at least, I have found that it is necessary to thoroughly clean out v7.  Doing an uninstall is insufficient.  It was necessary to run aswclear.exe in safe mode to banish v7 from the system.  Having done that, v8 runs like a dream.

The UI is a very decent job considering the constraints of the Metro interface.  It is easy to navigate and clear to read.  It is like day is to night when compared with AVG's UI effort.

If you run aswclear.exe , you'll be instructed to run the program in safe mode and. selecting that option,
Will reboot your system into safe mode and start the program for you. After the program completes, you'll again be
asked to reboot back into regular mode. All automatic an easy as pie.  :)

Have really appreciated Avast! since I installed it over 3 years ago. Loved the idea that Email scan no longer needed settings in Avast! to allow SSL connections. I followed the instructions and got rid of the settings in Avast! Now Avast doesn't let any SSL POP3 email in at all. (I checked this by turning off SSL scan setting in Email section. Only then will my client collect messages.) Very disappointed. Have to find new anti-virus software now.

I posted a thread on another sub-forum. Rather than reiterate, i'll just post a URL for those interested : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=117935.0

TL;DR, not especially happy with avast! 8 at present...

I am running Windows 7 64 on an I5 processor with 16gig of RAM and an SSD drive. My machine used to run like stink, now I am getting not responding when opening up windows. This is simple not Avast like. One of the poll choices indicates a desire to get a link to Avast 7, do you have that link?

Hi, how can I speed up the welcome screen? Because with avast I wait 17 sec to see my desktop, without avast I only wait for about 5 sec. Thx

I don't understand how, with the avalanche of people who cannot get Avast 8 up and running successfully, more than 50% of those voting think it's good.

I'm in the business of repairing non-working PCs. I installed v8 in response to the first pop-up suggesting I should do so. It cost me 3-4 hours in wasted time.

As I've said elsewhere here I was very happy with Avast 7 and have it running on dozens of computers that I maintain. Now I've felt obliged to inform the owners of those computers that in no circumstances should they upgrade to v8 as it will prove very costly. As a few days have now passed since my original comments I was hoping to find that a definite solution has been found to the problems but it appears not.

I'm asking myself how much time I should allow to go by before telling them that a different anti virus program needs to be installed on their computers. The present impasse is not encouraging. It appears to me that, possibly as a result of "the crisis" the publishers of Avast have tried to be too clever and gone down the same road as Microsoft and Adobe, offering bloat-ware with many unwanted features and little pre-launch testing. That tactic can never have a positive outcome.

If anyone from Avast is reading this let me say that it would be nice if we could be given some factual information as to what the problem is and the time-scale envisaged for correcting it. Sadly I feel that the continued absence of such information can only lead to mass emigration to another anti-virus program.

For the moment I live in hope as Avast v7 was (is) VERY good.

Guys,as you see many people here are having no issues with avast v8 stop bashing it as trash..if you have had issues please make seperate topics in the forum to get help and there can be no perfect stable security software and I have avast v8 on all my client's machines working flawlessly.  :)
The topic is "How do you like Avast V8", and responses of crapware are completely correct with this topic.
This is NOT a "RA RA RA ... Avast v8 is Great ... post your positive feedback" topic title.

I've done a lot of software testing and don't have the time to elaborate into all the problems in another thread.
I do, however, have a second or two to correct a senior member on forum etiquette.
Since 160 Million people use the product, I'd hardly call it "crapware".
You're correct that since the question asked was "how do You like Avast V8" there will also be negative answers.
Since this is a support forum, most users come here because they have a problem so this could have more negative than positive answers.
Negative answer however without explanations as to what the actual problem is are meaningless.
Almost all problems can be solved and most are related to other security software conflicts.
As I stated, which you apparently missed, "chrome automatically installed without my consent, chrome crashed, and there were certificate errors with my email client"
As well I stated that I don't have the time to elaborate in the other problems, but I do have a minute to correct a senior forum member that can't take the time to properly research before his/her posts.

Hi all!
Be careful with the Avast 8! It has injured my PC stronger as a virus!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The following has happend.
I successfully worked all the day yesterday. At evening I run Avast, it worked 3,5 hours and determined a virus.  Then it asked to restart PC and "clearned" PC about 6 hours again, with a blue screen. When I came to my work finally back, I found many my settings to be lost!!!

Many programs were deleted, namelly ABBY Lingvo, TotallCommander, FlowVision, Word, MATLAB2012a!!! (but MATLAB2006 remained). Besides, I lost all my post in the MS OutlookExpress!! My settings for Outlook and Skype were lost as well so that I need to recall all their passwords now...

The Avast Team, who is to recower my profits?
