I really dislike the latest version of AVAST software. I am constantly getting popups from AVAST saying to update the definitions. SO I put it on automatic updates. I am now getting three or four time a day a popup saying the definitions have been updated!!

This is absolute rubbish. I cannot tolerate popups and had no problems at all with V7 Avast.....

I tried to turn the popup windows off but no change.....
Untick show notification box after automatic update

it's a bit too intrusive for those of us who just want a good virus detector/scanner. I don't want if fudging with my inbox, flagging junkmail - and all these features make the program more bloated and take up more RAM...

It can't do it's job without being intrusive. It's already less intrusive than other AV programs.

Bob -
Not correct.  Avast 6 was smaller, and, I don't recall getting infected. (I use avast because i've never been infected (except intentionally) with avast on our PC's)
The Intrusiveness is like "avast" wanting you and everyone around you to know you have avast.
I know what i have, don't need it installing a junkmail toolbar in outlook without asking me explicitly, etc.

Avast 6 also did a whole lot less. If you don't want a function, simply disable it.
Many users want the new protection offered.
Since I don't use Outlook, I don't have a clue about the toolbar you mention.

Pretty nice -- I see you couldn't resist marching in step with Microsoft by adopting their dismally ugly Win8 GUI style.
Also, where in the heck does one look for the software version number?!?  Look, Ma... no About Box!???
But there are improvements in layout.

I'm hoping you guys improved the whole, "A rule was added to the Fire Wall, click here to manage it"  then, when you click, you are presented with the sum of it, with no idea (unless you're FireWall savvy) of where to look for that recent addition, or what to do with it, were you to even stumble upon it!  I can't tell, because a new rule hasn't been added, yet, under the new watch.  I mean, is there a way to, at least, do a time sort on the entries?  Or does it, now, take you right to the new rule?

Hello Poll! I never had a Virus. But the last days my W7 started to be very slow and the explorer worked confused. The avast free short and fast check found nothing, 2 times. The slower but deep check found nothing aswell. The PC still worked badly. I downloaded an other virus removel tool from the internet, a n d? It found 3 threads. 1 Troj, 1 Maleware and 1 W32etc.
Final result for me: forget Avastfree and the professional will be not better.
Sorry, but it´s the truth!

Were that toolbars ?  As Avast will only look for those if PUP is enabled

...

what!? oh C'mon...there is no such AV doing a 100% job against the everday flood of 15000 viruses...do you please mention the full name of the threats because they can be PUP's as essexboy said and plus browsing habits is something in question here.More ever, there is no 100% cleaning tool and if you get infected then you can come here to the forums and get cleansed for free so what's the problem!? that's the best support you can get :)

And these 100's of people you get infected and come here to the forums to be cleansed are just hardly even 8% of those more than 180 million users of the avast community and plus this:
chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

Removing avast is subjective to top scores and more ever there are many improvements coming along for avast in hardly 5 or 6 months time and some coming by next month.. you are missing the high level protection from avast when these things come in ;)

I have Avast AV on most my client's machine and believe me I check there PC's off and on avast has saved them numerous times most of them still are risky users..none of them have never been infected with avast on there,so in my opinion it kicks ass ;)

Also to mention there are many techs around the world I have seen who like avast for their clients because of the same exact above experience

Why is it EVERY time the system upgrades it looks my computer up ?
It takes almost 15 minutes of being on the internet bewfore it starts AND THEN IT TAKES ALMOST TEN MINUTES FOR IT TO UPGRADE AND LOCKS EVERYTHING UP !

This is a question that you should create your own new topic, so that we can get more details and information on your system so that we can help to resolve it.

I was a free user for years, and have been familiar with Alwil since the 'stone age'. I do not like the association with Google, and being a reasonable user I know they are the least of the bad biggies. I use the Windows firewall and the Avast unit in concert, and an hour ago I tested them at an online location recommended by the forum a while back. No holes! I am pleased with this product, and have a suggestion. No more bells and whistles. The only popups I have on my screen are the Avast ones!!! Lol, these are the only small glitches in this powerful tool. It does help to have a recently made system, w/o Win 8!!!
Happy camper.

I voted it's rubbish... (referring to the GUI).  I have no idea why everyone is doing the "windows 8" look-a-like contest.  Big childish blocks that look like it belongs in a baby's play pen.

I love Avast and have been using it for over 5 years, the guts and glory have always been robust but this 2013 windows 8 look makes me want to barf!

therealdizzy, That's exactly my position!!!
