Another option is that it could have been a windows defender update

It's possible.

I have Defender turned off, but it still might update.

Could also have been an avast! emergency update. ;) (I received one today.)

According to the Task Scheduler log, the Avast emergency update happened at 6:50AM which is the same time that that weird file stopped working. But it also said that the task completed. Strange.

This happened again this afternoon. New file name.

"Problem Event Name:   BEX
Application Name:   fb0b1946-351e-4aca-a422-79614bd0971d.exe
Application Version:   0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp:   51348652
Fault Module Name:   StackHash_fd00
Fault Module Version:   0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp:   00000000
Exception Offset:   00000000
Exception Code:   c0000005
Exception Data:   00000008
OS Version:   6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID:   1033
Additional Information 1:   fd00
Additional Information 2:   ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160
Additional Information 3:   fd00
Additional Information 4:   ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160"

I checked TaskScheduler in Event Viewer, and once again this happened the same time as an Avast Emergency Update. It must have something to do with the emergency updates.

I have confirmed by using the AIS trace that it is an Avast file and quite safe

Thanks everyone!

But I wonder why an Avast file is causing buffer overflow errors. Maybe it's corrupt and I should reinstall?

I'm using Vista's own firewall and no other security software except for Malwarebytes.

I never had this issue before upgrading to Avast 8.

What's strange is that according to Task Scheduler, the emergency update task successfully completes, even though I've gotten these error messages saying that the program  (the exe with the long file name) has stopped working. So far these errors have happened twice.

OK, if you like we try a clean reinstall...

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

I did an uninstall and reinstall and it happened again. I just added Avast and Avast Emergency Update as exceptions to Windows Vista Firewall. Hope this works. If not, I'll probably ignore it, since these files are benign anyway.
