Help! Computer keeps crashing.

Hi there,
I am hoping that someone here could help with a laptop problem I am having. It has Avast free edition.
No problems until yesterday when suddenly started getting sudden shut downs with Bluescreens.  It says the problem is Bad pool header.  After rebooting everything seems to working fine, but slower, except NO internet access. However, when I reboot in SAFE MODE I have NORMAL internet access.
I have run Avast boot-time scan twice which is clear.  Have also run full Malwarebytes scan and Spybot and both clear.  I am now lost as to what to do next. 
Incidentally, it seems that the computer is trying to install Vista Service Pack 2, but this is not completing as the computer goes into bluescreen.  If I right click 'computer' and 'properties' it comes up as having Service Pack 2 installed, but the Update Manager says that the install failed.  Could this be connected?

It would be great if anyone had any advice on this,
