Are you on a university network or did the drives come from a university system

As essexboy likely lives in a different time zone, and works as an elite malware removal instructor at an university, it is only when he is done with his day-time job he is able to come here and assist you and others.  The more detail you provide about the nature of your work (generally speaking) and what you use your external and thumb drive for, the faster the help you need can be gotten.  Details included should be also about the type of operating system you use, 64-bit or 32-bit, and Service Pack and anything else you may think to be relevant.

Are these drives password-protected?

My apologies I lost notification for this thread

In that case it is probably a block put on by the company to stop access to the drives, and ethically I cannot circumvent that

Hi Essexboy, the only problem is that even when I try opening the external drive and thumb drive using my personal laptop at home, I still get the same response. Still cant open/view the files. Although when I try scanning for viruses, I see that it scans the files that I know are there.

Does this mean that I should contact the company IT group for this? And its only they that can release that block?

Yes your company IT will be able to change the permissions so that you can access the drive remotely
