Cannot download email with Avast enabled

This just started today.

Outlook Express tries to connect to our POP3 server to download email and eventually gets a timeout message after 60 seconds.

If I disable Avast, the email downloads with no delay.

If I go to Avast settings -> Troubleshooting -> Redirect Settings and delete port 110 from the POP port list the email will download with Avast enabled.

My concern is that this will open up possible email threats if the email is not getting scanned.

Is there something else going on?  I have the latest version of Avast running under Windows XP with Outlook Express.
