I tried, and it says that "Setup can't continue because a more recent version of internet explorer is installed on your computer"

Intriguing as IE9 is being reported

Download Complete Internet Repair to your desktop

Unzip all the files to their own folder on the desktop
Within the folder double click CIntRep
The programme will then run
Select the Repair Internet Explorer option
Press go
Let me know if it is able to conduct the repair, there is a log at the bottom

Ugh, early celebration. Ran the scan on Avast, and the "C:\windows\assembly\gac_32\desktop.ini" is still there. What is the next step I should take?

By itself the ini file is impotent, it may have been a last ditch regeneration before Combofix finalised the clean

Let me know if it re-appears

Ok. It is better now I guess, because the first time, it wouldn't even allow itself to be moved to chest.  :-\

So everything is fine now as long as it's in quarantine?

Subject to no further problems   :)
