Automatic update on w2k
« on: September 19, 2003, 08:05:04 AM »
Hi all

Is there a known issue for automatic updates on w2k? I am using avast!4 on a win98 machine (where automatic updates work fine) and on another pc with w2k where, with the same settings, I never get an automatic update.

Any ideas?

thx  Martin

So you're never notified that there is something new, or the update just doesn't work even if you start it manually?

You know, the program updates are by default set to "Ask", i.e.  they aren't launched automatically, you should be just notified that an update is available...

Updates are set to "automatic", and if I had not my win98 machine I would not notice *any* update.  I then do a manual update ("update now") without any problems.
I forgot to mention that I am logged with administrator rights (but not as "Administrator")

How do you connect to the Internet on the W2K machine? Do you have ping's enabled?

Try e.g. this command

ping www.avast.com

Does it work there?

Thanks

< How do you connect to the Internet on the W2K machine?

LAN and DSL

<Do you have ping's enabled?

How do you enable/disable pings?
ping 192.168.1.XX detects other PCs in my LAN

<Try e.g. this command

<ping www.avast.com

<Does it work there?

There's no reply, even when I am logged in as "Administrator"

thx Martin

Hmm, seems that someone on the way is dropping the ICMP (ping) packets. No wonder it doesn't work, then. Please start avast, go to Settings, Updates (Connections), and turn on the "Always connected" option. That should help.
