What happens when my avast! Free's license expires
« on: April 29, 2013, 05:17:16 PM »
So I have a 365 day free license (which I do not regret getting!), but what happens when the 365 days are up? Do I have to buy the product or can I simply re-activate the license?

Thanks

Is it necessary to renew more registration expiration dates every 12 months?

I'm using free Avast.  I always paid for virus programs before and was considering paying for Avast, but it has nagged me so much since I started using the free version, it put me off.  Anyway, a couple of weeks ago is started giving me messages that my license is expiring soon (again, I'm using the FREE version).  I got them every freaking day, several times a day.  It's culimated in a message saying my license expires today -- and it's said that for days.  It gives me the option to pay for Avast (which I will not do at this time due to this very issue I'm reporting) or to continue with the free version.  I have chosen the latter option several times over the last few days and it does nothing.  I keep getting the messages and popups and it's clear that they will not stop until I pay.  So, why is Avast pretending I can continue with the free version?  Or, is that I CAN, but the price of using it is the daily nag screens?  Please advise:  either way, your sales tactics have actually caused me to not pay for something I was otherwise quite willing to pay for.

What does it say here:

@bevhoward,
You are totally incorrect. I've used the free version since 2003 without having to uninstall  and reinstall.

No, that did not help.

Now whenever I start my computer I get a message that Avast has expired but "don't worry, there is another year of protection waiting for you."  There is a button to click to register for another year.  When I click it, it takes me to a page with a loading error screen.  I've done this three days in a row.  It can't load the page.

When I open the console I see this:

When I click on the link to activate my account or to register, I get the same issue as last week: I am presented with a screen offering either the paid or free version.  If I select FREE it takes me to a page asking me to upgrade for the special low price.  I do not wish to (as I said, i was going to pay for it, but I don't want to feel like I'm extorted into it) but there is no other option to select.

I have resolved my problem by paying for BitDefender instead.  This has been 3 weeks of constant problems and I've tried literally everything to renew my Avast.  I'm a programmer by trade -- not a moron.  This should not be this hard, unless this is intentional to try to force people to pay while pretending that free coverage is on offer.

thank you for trying to help.

ARGH.  So I want to uninstall Avast.  They have this uninstall util which warns it will "uninstall everything" in the selected directory (you don't have a targeted uninstall tool for pete's sake?).  Thing is, I have a paid 3-year license to Avast Secure Line VPN which is integrated with Avast's firewall and antivirus console.  So I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of avast firewall and antivirus so I can go back to using BitDefender (and enjoy far fewer system tray popups), but I can't figure out how to get rid of it and keep the secureline I have happily paid for.  I tried to write Avast customer support, but they apparently provide zero support unless you pay (again, feeling extorted.  I HAVE paid for secure line, but not the product I want gone).  So, can anyone help me get rid of this thing but keep my VPN, which is great, by the way.

(p.s. can anyone actually read the captcahs on this page?  They are so obscured I can't make out a single letter on some of them.  I have to use the LISTEN feature each time).

I'm really not that curmudgeonly but this has been just a terrible experience.

It is a targeted tool but avast let's you select a folder where you want to install it, that is why they give this warning.

Download the stand alone version for secureline.

Hey, I was away and should have replied earier to thank everyone for their help with this frustrating issue.  It is much appreciated.

And yes, I do know about Opera and its features.  My partner is a die hard Opera user, but he's had a lot of compatibility with sites in the past so I've avoided it.  I hear that's improved, and as a web developer, I do test on Opera as part of my process, but it hasn't even been quite what I was looking for. The avast VPN is working out pretty well so far and the cost isn't bad.

Thanks for the tips.

Today this afternoon, I decided to download the Avast! Free Antivirus and the Avast! Uninstall Utility on my computer before my expiration date for my registration expires on March 8th, 2018. First, I used the Avast! Uninstall Utility to uninstall this program. After that, I re-installed Avast! Free Antivirus. After that, my expiration date for the registration will expire on March 8th, 2018 still pops up when it goes on. It was a little confused to me. Normally, computer users uninstall and re-install Avast! Free Antivirus to get different expiration dates for registration every month.
