JRE7 updates
« on: May 12, 2013, 03:04:21 PM »
Every couple of days I am getting a message from Avast requesting that I update JavaRunTime Environment7.  When I do the update my pc tells me I already have it updated, but even so a few days later the same thing happens again.  If I look at the update panel I can see 2 JRE7s the first is

Java runtime environment 7
Local version 7.0.210.11
New version 7.0.210.11

which is updated and the second is

Java runtime environment 7
Local version 7.0.170.2
New version 7.0.210.11

which is the one that constantly asks to be updated.

why is this happening and is there anyway to resolve it?

Same thing happened with me.  Got tired of messing with it so I just clicked ignore as I do have the latest version installed.

One is the 32bit version (and possibly the one being mentioned) the other 64bit.

Personally I wouldn't shoot the messenger (software updater) but remove the problem, JAVA.

JAVA is a huge target for malware exploits, which is why it is crucial to keep it up to date, but this isn't an essential application. Unless you absolutely need JAVA, you have an application that uses it or you visit sites that use it (this is not JavaScript) then you would be best uninstalling JAVA.

hi moray simon,

Actually there is something you can do about this.  Go to this site and download and exectute JavaRa.  This program will remove all old/older versions of java from your system.

http://singularlabs.com/software/javara/  Helpful when you have an older version that just won't leave.

Try the above and see if you can get that message to go away.  I'd never choose ignore, but would instead fix the problem.  This tool may just do the trick for you.

FYI:  I do not run java in any form due to security risks.  [EDIT:]  java is not javascript which is used in your web browser application.  If java is not needed, uninstall it and be rid of java related malware.

Well you have the information in this topic, make up your mind do you need JAVA and if not completely remove it.

You shouldn't have multiple versions of JAVA anyway and the out of date one (JRE Update 17) should be removed even if you are intending to keep JAVA.

If your post was directed to me, yes I need Java and why should (JRE Update 17) be removed?

BTW.......I clicked on fix so it downloaded the latest version which I already have but still when I go to SoftwareUpdater it shows it needs to be updated.  I've updated 4 times today and it still shows that.

.... why should (JRE Update 17) be removed? ...

http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml

I removed (JRE Update 17)  so now the Software Updater show all programs are up to date.

Thank you for your help.
