MEMORY!!
« on: April 03, 2005, 07:28:39 PM »
Hey!

Guys I have a question about memory usage, I was looking through the programs in Add & Remove and saw that AVAST is at 230MB, is this normal?!!  I was quite frankly alarmed at such a high figure, this sounds very abnormal!!  I went into repair a couple of times for a few problems I had previously, would such a high usage have anything to do with that?  How can I lower it?  I'm only running the follow four providers:

Internet mail
Web Shield
Standard Shield
Network Shield

All are running in a normal mode, I guess I'm so shocked because it was never anywhere near that high before, is something wrong, should I un and reinstall?  What gives!  My operating system is Windows 2000 Professional (70MB).

Normal memory numbers look more like this under XP Pro SP2.  Running a mail check every two minutes with Poptray, Avast! Mail Service listening, plus Opera browser using Webshield.  Number in Add and Remove is actually just disk storage, including all the databases, help files, text files, etc. but is only 46M for me.  Look in the Program Files/Alwil Software directory to see what kind of extra stuff you might have-maybe backup copies from the repair?

Hi SCORPIONINBLUE,

this number refers to the used hard-disk space, not memory/RAM usage;  and besides I find it quite unreliable:
check the properties of your avast-folder, and you'll see that the real number is quite lower (unless you've accumulated a huge amount of stuff in the quarantine or moved-folder)

or it could be that this means the HIGHEST use of drive space ever needed, which can actually go quite high if avast is unpacking and scanning large archives on your HD (these temporary files are cleared after scan is finished, though, unless the PC crashes during a scan)

Nothing to worry about.. ;)

I have basically the same set-up and mine is much less 62.75MB (HDD space not RAM usage).

Have you still got the providers that you aren't using installed? If so you can remove them by using the add remove programs > Change/Remove > Change > untick those providers you aren't using.

I'm also not sure if this sum doesn't include the VRDB file which can grow considerably.

Hi david..

I think mine is about 11MB if I have the right file (likely to be the largest) C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\integ\avast.int?

I went in and ticked off every thing I didn't need, if that stopes those running processes than thankyou for the info.
