AVAILABLE DISK SPACE
« on: August 07, 2013, 12:43:23 PM »
Hi everyone, it's me again.

Available disk space is 15%. Where and what should I start cleaning up?
Is an automated software program available for help?

I do look forward to replies, thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Hermie

Thanks Pondus for the reply.
I'm not looking for a cleaner, I got to remove and/or delete data from the disk to create more free space.
Where to start with: email messages, pictures, downloaded programs, etc?
Any suggestions are welcome, thanks.

Whatever you don't need get rid of it or move it to an external drive, as to what to delete/move only you can make that decision.

Old restore points is a good starting point :)

I don't believe there is a program to help/automatically move/remove 'unwanted' programs (emails, images), in regard to programs you installed and no longer want. That isn't something (a decision) a program can make or it could well make the wrong decision on what to get rid of.

When you get to less than 20% free space (as it can impact on performance) you should seriously be looking at upgrading your hard drive or adding a second drive and move data to that.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I'm unable to export my in box email messages and sent email messages to my external HDD from Freecom!
CSV export of contacts was no problem.
What;s going on here?

I had to do the same thing years ago and simply moved my Pictures, MP3 Files and all saved "software setup Files" to a 8GB USB Flashdrive. That alone gained me Significant HD Space.
 Never bothered with Emails. :)

You don't say what your email program is as it is possible to back-up your emails to a different location and then go into your email program and remove the older ones.

You say you can't export your inbox, that begs the question do you not have some sort of folder structure within your email program ?

Storing everything in the inbox leaves them at risk of loss, this is usually as a result of file corruption. This can happen if the inbox is open (most likely) and you have a system crash, files that are open are at risk of corruption. You should have a structure of folders that relate to the content of the emails and the only thing in the in-box would be recent emails that you haven't read and subsequently moved to the folder related to its content.

These folders would then be a different and once you know where your email program stores the emails it is possible to back them up. See image extract of my current backup folder showing the thunderbird emails having been backed up. Note the ZZ_Archive folder as periodically I move older emails to this folder so as to keep the active folders smaller.

So it is possible, but you need to get organised, but in all honesty a hard drive upgrade cloning the old hard drive over to it would be the way to go as if you get to less than 15% the windows defrag won't run either.

EDIT: forgot to include image attachment.

Thanks for the replies.

I have copied the Picasa images to an external HDD.
What to do next?

How to delete all Picasa folders at my PC?

If I take a look at E: at my PC, it lists:
folder SRECYCLE.BIN (empty)
folder images (36,6 GB)
file hd2811.tib (3,99 GB)
file hd2812.tib (3,99 GB)
file hd2813.tib (3,99 GB)
file hd2814.tib (597 MB)
Huh, what's tib?

Seems that Picasa puts images at E:

I shall be looking forward hearing from you again, thanks.

Best regards, Hermie
