Help. How do I go about running a Boot Scan with Avast asking me?

Start the main programme, then select menu where you will see an item called boot time scan select this and a boot scan will be scheduled..

If you have XP or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan (boot-time scan isn't available in win98, winme.
Try the, schedule boot-time scan in avast's menu (or try the 'Schedule Boot-Time Scan' using RejZoR's AEC
