Hey Suz,
It's radicalb21. Here is a list of somethings to do.

1. Repair profile.
2. Clear out history, cache and cookies. Then close out the browser and restart the browser.
3. Remove FireFox form your system by using add/remove programs.
4. Then restart your system.
5. Once at your Desktop goto the Programs Files Folder and delete the file folder labeled either mozilla or firefox.
6. It may also help to go to the RUN Command and type regedit. MAKE a BACKUP of your registry. Then delete anything in reference to firefox or mozilla. This can be done by using FIND feature in the registry editor. Then to continue searching use F3 function key.
7. I only suggest that people who feel safe doing STEP 6 do that. REGISTRY EDITING is not for beginners.

Firefox needs to work on its update feature- it's never worked for me.

If update doesn't work, just download Firefox again and install it over the old version.

The program will be updated and settings, favourites etc kept.

Wow all this time and you are getting somewhere now.

If you have a very early version of firefox (you never said what it is), then the update was worse than useless (as Frank said), even Mozilla didn't recommend using it, rather download the latest version, uninstall, boot and install the latest version. From firefox 1.0.2 it has improved slightly, enough so to have Mozilla ask people to use it (and report if they have problems ;D). But the safest option is to download new, uninstall, boot, install new.

Try what 'radicalb21' has said and let us know how you get on.

Thanks all looking good so far, reinstalled and followed instructions as far as the registry afraid to fiddle with that in case I mess up....third time lucky if it doesn't work this time or causes me any more nightmares....it's back to IE.

If all goes well how do you get patches for FF as you do with IE? just for future reference!! also when windows has updates how would I go about installing them as FF is set as main browser?.....thanks for all your patience.... :)

Firefox patches seem to consist of a new version. For some people this happens via firefox update; for me this has never worked and I've had to go to the Mozilla site and download the new version.

I hope Mozilla will work on this so that updates go more smoothly in the future.

Visiting the Windows update site still requires IE. (As do any other sites requiring ActiveX controls.)

(Most of the timw not having ActiveX is like not having a Pandora's box of web nasties waiting to be opened: ie a positive advantage.)

Once you get used to Firefox, you won't want to go back to IE!

Acually FreewheelingFrank, sometimes we have to go back to IE to do some task that FF won't be able to do.   ;)
