Hi , on a different computer at the moment.
Other one got progressively worse. It's in the shop & I've saved everything on it.
I should have it back Tues/Weds & I'll let you know what was wrong with it .
Thanks for trying to help me,

Sounds like a possible adware problem as they tend to eat up resources

Well £95 later I have my HP back.
It was reset to factory settings as it was seriously infected ,and all my files were encrypted ,I couldnt open anything in the end ,couldnt even get past the opening stage.
I wondered if it was worth keeping this laptop going but I love it (when not infected that is).
Why didnt Avast stop this ,or are some things too much for any virus ware?
Very fed up at the mo :(

Sounds like the latest ransomeware, they are mean and nasty.  They are usually installed from an infected e-mail attachment

You can put a block on the known launch points by using the following programme.  Just install and forget, as it changes permissions on some registry keys

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Then you can set Avast hardened mode to aggressive this will then show an alert for any unknown problem and give you the option to add it as an exclusion or stop it from running
