PUSH updates not working with Outlook/Exchange sub-system
« on: July 15, 2005, 02:36:00 PM »
Hi guys,

we have just installed a trial version of the Pro edition, with PUSH updates activated (also we have subscribed our email address to the mailing list). For email we use MS Outlook 2002.

Outlook works normal: the Outlook/Exchange sub-system starts normally with Outlook. Also we receive PUSH-email messages. But... when we receive them (an PUSH-email), just nothing happens.

This is weird, because the 'PUSH setting' is activated, and normal updates are automatically installed without problems.

In order to solve the problem, we deactivated the Avast! 4 plug-in in MS Outlook (via the "Add-In Manager"). After this change, all email messages are scanned with the Internet Mail sub-system. And, when a PUSH-message is received, Avast! starts immediately with updating...

Relevant activated settings:
- automatic proxy detection
- PUSH iAVS activated
- update virus library: automatic
- update program: automatic
- my computer is always connected to the Internet

Please help us, so we can use PUSH iAVS via the Outlook/Exchange sub-system.

Greetings,
Jasper

Not all the email notifications are push updates.
The majority of them are 'normal' releases and the email is just a warning/confirmation.
iPush emails are special one that 'invoke' the update. They're reserved for special updates, urgent. Not all of them are like this.

How can I trace if they really invoke an update?
For example: an identical pc with the Outlook/Exchange sub-system enabled does not update via PUSH iAVS, after receiving the same email message.

Precisely, I'm talking about the following email message:

avast! duw-actualisatie: succesvol uitgevoerd.

VPS: 0528-5, 15-07-2005

Note: this code is pasted from the pc with the Outlook/Exchange plug-in disabled (and thus with the Internet Mail sub-system enabled), so this PUSH update was successful.

Well, strange...
If so, there is a problem... Internet Mail provider is not recognizing the iPush emails!!!  :o

As far I know, it was by the message: This is a standard update  ::)

So, when you receive this kind of e-mail (announcing an update) in Outlook (i.e. with the plugin activated), what is at the bottom of the message? Is there the avast! duw-actualisatie: .... line there, possibly announcing an error, or it's not there at all?

Can you confirm my assumptions?
Can you say what kind of updates were the last ones, ipush or not?
I'm receiving Normal updates for a long time... There is no error message at the bottom.

Internet Mail provider is not recognizing the iPush emails!!!
This is not true:
  • Outlook 2002 with Outlook/Exchange sub-system enabled --> PUSH iAVS not working
  • Outlook 2002 with Outlook/Exchange sub-system disabled --> PUSH iAVS working (via Internet Mail provider, because email messages are scanned via Internet Mail provider after Outlook/Exchange sub-system is disabled)

Igor: when I receive 'this kind of email' with the plug-in activated, no explicit message is at the bottom (in fact, nothing happens).
When I receive it with the plug-in deactivated, the dutch message "duw-actualisatie: succesvol uitgevoerd" appears at the bottom, with means: PUSH-actualisation: successful completed.

Tech: I assume that 528-5 was a PUSH update.

Strange... Should I disable Outlook plugin for Internet Mail to work?
Weird... Why? Can't I use both avast! providers?

I've just uninstalled the Outlook/Exchange sub-system, because it isn't working correctly. PUSH update via this sub-system are not 'invoked', and I never see lines like "X-Antivirus: avast!" in the headers of my Outlook messages.

Now the Outlook/Exchange sub-system is uninstalled, all Outlook messages are scanned via the Internet Mail provider (I'm using Windows XP). This works fine, and the "X-Antivirus"-headers are added correctly.

I still think this is a weird problem. A real solution would be welcome.

Thanks anyway.

The X- headers are never added by the Outlook/Exchange provider...
But the PUSH updater should indeed work...
