Win 7 32-bit won't boot, Safe mode hangs on aswRvrt.sys
« on: May 18, 2014, 10:08:19 PM »
Hello everyone.

When I awoke my PC from hibernation this morning I got a system tray bubble that said something like "Avast is turned off," which I'd never seen before.  Avast looked fine when I opened it and checked to see if the usual things were 'on.'  When I opened a web browser, I wasn't able to bring up any web pages, so I restarted my computer.  Now, I can't boot Windows 7 32-bit.  My screen displays the background of the Windows login page and stays there indefinitely.  When I look hit F8 right at startup I am given the following options:

Repair Your Computer *

Safe Mode *
Safe Mode with Networking *
Safe Mode with Command Prompt *

Enable Boot Logging *
Enable low-res video
Last Known Good Configuration *
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Disable Automatic restart on system failure
Disable Driver Signature Reinforcement

Start Windows Normally *

* indicates options I've tried that lead to the same crash.  The Safe Mode options display system files as they load.  The last one to load is 'aswrvtr.sys' after which the computer hangs for a short time and then either goes to normal windows startup (and hangs on the aforementioned blue background) or simply restarts.  I see that this .sys file is Avast-related and others have had similar problems.

I'm currently using an old computer running XP to post this, so I can't make a System Recovery CD, nor can I find the discs that came with my sick computer.  I appreciate any suggestions anyone has.

Does that boot cd made by OTPLEnet.exe need to be created on a Windows 7 machine?  The only working PC I have is Windows XP, and when I attempt to boot my sick computer with the CD that application creates, it says 'starting REATOGO-something' then briefly displays the black 'starting Windows XP' screen (on my sick computer that uses Windows 7) and then blue-screens.
