Avast Home 4.6.691 scans files in exclusions list
« on: July 16, 2005, 09:30:29 PM »
Hi,
I'm using wildmask for file types that I want Avast NOT to scan (*.mpg,*.mpeg,*.avi,*.wmv,*.wma,*.mp3,*.asf,*.midi,*.pdf,*.wav) and whenever I run the AntiVirus Scan (anyone), Avast scans all file types including ones in the exclusions list which is a big time wasting operation. How can this be avoided ?
Thanks

Where/how do you set them exactly in the exclusion list?

They are entered exactly like i'm presenting them here (*.mpg,*.mpeg,*.avi,*.wmv,*.wma,*.mp3,*.asf,*.midi,*.pdf,*.wav !

So, you set the exclusions in the Simple User Interface (program Settings, Exclusions page) and run the scan in the Simple User Interface as well?

igor, YES, I've entered the file types type as presented here in the (program settings-exclusions-*.mpg,*.mpeg,*.avi,*.wmv,*.wma,*.mp3,*.asf,*.midi,*.pdf,*.wav) . YET,when i run an AV scan (of any kind) i get Avast scanning ALL the  file types (INCLUDNG all file types in the exclusions list). Just, how can this thing be avoided, and time can be saved in process of scanning ? Thanks . Z.

I hope you will forgive a probably stupid question.

How do you know that files in the exclusion list are being scanned?

The exclusions don't work with the resident scanners (as indicated in the note in the Exclusions window) and the ashQuick.exe (right click context menu) I believe, so it should only work with the On-Demand scans started from the Simple/Enhanced User Interface.

I see you have all the file types together above, I assume that you haven't tried to do the same in the exclusions (as I believe they need a line entry for each file type exclusion)?

See image of my exclusions list, although I tend to give the path and don't bother to exclude the files you mention. Using the Quick, Standard or Through scan should also limit what files are included, Quick and Standard may probably exclude those automatically and wouldn't be listed in the files not scanned on completion of a scan. If that is how you are detecting/saying they are being scanned because they aren't on the list?

I would also ask - how do you know the files are scanned?
If you exclude particular file extensions, they actually may be shown in the progress - but they shouldn't really be scanned.

Answer from DavidR explains the situation. I was scanning files from right-click context menu and since i have music video concerts with 2gb size each,i was waiting for some time (20sec+) for scanner to scan one such file although that's not a virus threatening file. Anyway, thanks to everyone else who helped with their participation.

I'm afraid I cannot reproduce the problem. The list of exclusions (in the Simple UI) works correctly even for the Explorer Extension (= right click context menu) here, the files are not scanned.

I don't know... can you post a screenshot of your Exclusions list please, just as DavidR did?

I think it was confusion on the part of 'gisot' he right clicked a location that contained some of the excluded files and couldn't understand why they were scanned as the right click ashquick scans everything.

However, I too would like to see a screen shot as his comment:

This would be wrong in the Program Settings, Exclusions I believe as I tried to explain to him.

Well, as I was trying to say, even the "right click scanner" should follow the list of exclusions.

I tested it using the folder my drive images are stored in and that is in the exclusions for *.pqi and *.v2i as these files are partition images and up to 2GB in size. It started to scan showing the window and listed a *.002 file (image continuation file) but it didn't finish and show the explorer extension, so I can only assume that it either hung or was scanning the *.pqi or *.v2i files, I ended up cancelling the ashquick scan.

I tried again and let it run, it completed showing only two files scanned which is correct only the .002 files were scanned.

I also checked it against the zEicarTests folder and that acted as you stated, 0 files scanned when they are *.* excluded.
So it would appear that 'gisot' has entered the exclusions in the same way as for the standard shield advanced exclusions, which obviously doesn't work in the Program Settings Exclusions.
