Try this : Avast - Tools - Firewall - Settings - Network profiles - select your VPN network profile - select Profile "Public" and check "Friends" - Ok.

In : Avast - Tools - Firewall - Settings - Policies - System rules ... are VPN connections "Enabled" ?

yes they are enabled, but my vpn connection is openvpn based though.

In : Avast - Firewall - Application Rules -  ( OpenVPN ? ) - can you find the application rules configured for openvpn.exe ?

What happens if you add port 1194  ( add  " ,1194 " to the ports  ) and click : Close ?

Unless you're still on Vista or XP, turn off the Avast Firewall and use the one that comes with Windows till you get an answer.
I use the free version and can't help you with firewall settings.
