avast! mft utility

upgraded Avast free, and now mftutil.exe is using 13% of cpu constantly, computer is noisy working at what?
Unable to end process, access is denied.
How do I shut this off? Before upgrade this mft utility was not there. Windows 7.

That is NG ..  Initially I would go for a clean install

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast 
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

• Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
• Once complete reboot your system
• Reinstall Avast

What is and why is mftutil.exe running constantly now?

That file is part of NG and should stop after it has generated the clone image of your sytem, this may take 10 to 15 minutes dependant on your system.  If it is still running after that then it may be advisable to uninstall the NG element of Avast

Ok, next question. What is the NG element of avast? What does it do?  Where do I disable it at?

It has been running all day long and is at 94,809,190 and counting up I/O reads.

BTW the product I have is Avast internet security (not the free version) that I pay yearly for.

Yep I have IAS as well.  NG is the new sandbox if you do not install NG then the old sandbox will take over

To remove NG go to control panel > programmes and features
Select Avast
Select change
Remove the tick from NG and then continue
Reboot on completion

Thank you, that worked great until I recently had a issue with avast and had to reinstall it.  I used the avast uninstall utility, downloaded the most recent version of AIS, now I am back to mftutil.exe always running, it has been running for 3 days straight. I went to add/remove then change and NG is not a option to un-tick. What do I do to stop this horrible horrible process? Short of uninstalling avast and using a different program? Do I remove sandbox?  Will that stop this hog from slowly ravaging all my systems resources?

Time to start doing a custom install. that way you get to chooxse what you want to install and leave out the things you don't.

Thank you very much bob, love the tutorial, nicely done.  However, I did'nt have to do another uninstall and reinstall.  I just went into change and uninstalled sandbox.  Now mftutil.exe is no longer making my system drive C:  work over time and no more resources are being slowly gobbled up.
 Much appreciated advice though.

The tutorial was meant for future clean installs.
You're correct in using Program and Features to change your current installed version to remove the unwanted items.

LOL I spoke to soon, mftutil.exe is back and spinning my C: drive at 100%again.  So I guess sandbox was not the hooked component.  I will be doing a clean uninstall and reinstall once again  . I am getting very frustrated with avast! When I initially started using avast five or so years ago it was a efficient and straight forward program.  Now it is seems with every new iteration the software is much less efficient and loaded with bloatware. This mftutil.exe that keeps system drive at 100% utilization has the potential to physically damage your hardware. This needs to be addressed by avast and should be taken very seriously.

I use windows 8 and Avast free: The mft utility uses 70% or more of my disk constantly I am the admin on my computer and it denies me access. I have tried a clean install and several other things including attempting to change the data. the NG is not under the change menu so I'm getting really annoyed.

Ah, the perils of searching for your issue, finding a "old" post, and not having the "old" solution work anymore.

If the old suggestions are correct about NG being the cause and you want to remove it (NG), I believe Avast renamed it in some of the recent installers as Secure Virtual Machines.

I have not personally tried the Secure Virtual Machines option, waiting for it to be more stable (e.g., fewer issues in the forum) so it would be interesting to know if removing it cleaned up your system.
