The Microsoft Update KB3035583 is an ad trojan to place Windows 10 banners on infected machines. It installs a folder in Windows System32 called GWX (Get Windows 10).

At first it was classified "recommended" but if you uninstall it then Microsoft just resends it classified as an "important" update.

Microsoft support only say that the update will add new functionality for Windows 7 and 8 updates (LIARS!) Avast should treat it as a PUP.

Sorry but if you intend to update your OS to Windows 10 for free, then this is something you'll eventually need.
It certainly isn't anything for your AV to block.

I hid KB3035583 update several days ago while it was still optional. I don't have plans to update to Windows 10.

What's up with these 3 updates (KB2952664) classified as optional, (KB3031432) and (KB3004375) both of them classified as important. These 3 updates came up just last month and I installed it and again it came up today and it got installed successfully. Are these 3 updates got to do with the free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 SP1 OS via Microsoft Update?

Sorry, but calling this a trojan is just ridiculous. It's completely benign and will be necessary for those taking advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10. It does add new functionality and there is no lying, in no way should Avast or any other AV treat this as something bad,

Is it known if the problem with Windows Updates was resolved in the latest version(s) ?

I have a Vista system that was running 2208.  Prior to doing MS updates, I disabled avast permanently
(through the icon) so that it would remain inactive through the reboot.

After rebooting, Vista went into something that looked like safemode, but it was not safe mode.
Many of the services had not started and it was the basic desktop (without Aero).
Looked like Windows 2000.

Tried system restore first.  Successfully completed but the above situation remain.
Then uninstalled avast + awsclear in safemode.  Rebooted, everything back to normal.

I guess I was lucky VIsta even booted, so I was able to repair the system.

Is this problem known and has it been resolved?

AMD FX-4300 4GB DDR3
avast free 2279 (Windows XP), MBAM free

Hi davexnet,

Your pseudo 'Safe Mode' was likely the native VGA Vista video driver running instead of your onboard Intel or a third-party discrete video driver.  VGA is Microsoft's/IBM's 16 color driver dating back to 1987, so it does not look normal; Safe Mode uses this driver as Windows is running minimal drivers in that scenario.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array

Likely your normal enhanced video driver crashed on boot, and your system ran VGA instead.  As you say, lucky you got video at all.
