@Dch48,

I don't use Internet Explorer but I did install the update which didn't require a restart.

An intel graphics driver broke my new win 8.1 computer. It installed automatically. The next day I checked my win 7 computer and it showed the same win update so I hid it.

This windows update was published yesterday but I'm not sure whether or not I should install it.  I'm not ready to upgrade to windows 10 yet.  KB3035583

I captured the full screen so don't know why part of it isn't shown.

Simple answer: If you intend to at some point upgrade, get the update.
If you don't, don't get the update but also get rid of all the stuff already downloaded to your computer.
Bow out from the upgrade offer and stop receiving these types of updates.

I wanted to upgrade to win 10 on my new computer but since it's unusable I can't.

I don't want to upgrade on win 8.1 I'm using now.

What do you mean unusable?  The best way to upgrade to 10 is not to let Windows do it through the option in that update. It works much better if you download and run the Media Creation Tool and tell it to upgrade. The tool is here; http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. If you want to be able to go back to 8.1, the best thing to do is to create a system backup on an external drive or USB stick before you do the upgrade. There have been other people having problems with Intel graphics but from all reports, those issues have now been fixed.

People have reported far fewer problems upgrading that way than by waiting for Windows to do it by itself. I used the tool on release day and it worked perfectly and kept all of my over 320 gigabytes of files intact and usable.

My a little over 2 month old computer is unusable because an Intel Graphics Driver was automatically installed via win update.  I wanted to upgrade on that one, not the one I'm using now.  I did install the win update.

Yes, I edited my post to tell you that the initial problems with Intel graphics have been fixed and you should be good to go now.

Nice to know the Intel Graphic's has been fixed but that won't help me now because the damage has already been done. The screen resolution was messed up, couldn't see anything on the right side of the task bar.I tried to do a refresh on my new computer, when it got to 98% it showed insert disk which I did many times so I finally gave up.

Do you have a recovery disk for that computer? If you do, you should boot from that and let it set everything back to how it came from the factory. Then use the Windows 10 Media Creation tool to upgrade. If you don't have a recovery disk, call the manufacturer and ask for one. What brand computer is it?(Sony and Toshiba had the most problems) Also, do you know how to go into the BIOS and set the machine to boot from the CD drive?

Yes, I have a recovery disk and it's in my new computer but it doesn't work.  It's still stuck on insert disk.  My computer is a Dell.  No, I don't know how to go into the BIOS and set the machine to bood from the CD drive.

This should help. I's set to use a USB but simply put CD in the first spot and it starts looking for a CD.

Make sure you make CD first and not USB. If it is set to USB, any time you boot the computer with a USB drive connected, if it is not bootable, you will get the message that no operating system is found and the computer will not boot up until the USB stick is removed and the machine is restarted again.  It will give you the impression that your computer is completely messed up when it isn't.  This does not happen with disks. If the disk is not bootable, Windows just skips it and goes to the regular boot from the hard drive. I absolutely do not recommend setting a computer to boot from USB unless there is no disk drive.

Midnight, turn on the computer and keep tapping on  F2 to get into the BIOS. Once there, look through  the options until you find something called boot order or boot options. Put the CD drive first and the hard drive second. then exit the Bios saving the settings. this is usually done by hitting F10. The computer will restart and then should boot from the recovery disk. From there you should be able to set the machine back to how it was when you bought it.

Another thought is that usually there is more than one recovery disk. When it says to insert disk it may mean the second one.

I have only one recovery disk and I had a hard time trying to get Dell to send me one.  I'll call tech support tomorrow and find out whether or not I need 2nd one. If I do I'll ask for it to be mailed to me.

I think one recovery disk was in the box with the computer I'm using now.

You create your own rescue disk. It's a Windows function:

You create your own rescue disk. It's a Windows function:

That's a Windows repair disk, not a factory recovery disk. The factory disk will reinstall the operating system, drivers, and additional software that the computer originally came with. Most manufacturers will only let you reinstall using their disks unless you go out and buy another retail copy of Windows. You can repair Windows (sometimes) using the disk created from within Windows.
