As I mentioned in another post related to MS Windows Defender exploit fix, because it is in integral part of the win10 OS (even if disabled) I believe it should have been updates as part of an earlier WU.

I noticed late last night that this months Windows Updates have not installed on either of two Windows 10 machines.  Retrying Windows Update this morning didn't solve it, and still shows a long list of failed updates.  (Sorry I can't post a list of them at the moment, as I'm now trying to manually install the first of the cumulative updates.)

The first error code was 0x8024a105

Edited to add that I've manually downloaded the cumulative version of KB4022715 and it is taking a long time to install.  Meanwhile my wife's Windows10 laptop is downloading the automatic updates again. (KB4022715, KB4022730 and KB3186568)

No.

But when I do have problems I head over here, and manually download the full version required:  https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4022725

Save this install file.

Keep in mind you need the version of your operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) and get the one marked as 'Cumulative Update'.  Ignore the 'Delta' version.

Double-click the installer once download is finished.

A standalone installer will run and will take some time to complete.  Do not interrupt/cancel the run window once it starts.

@mchain,

That's what I'm doing right now.  I did ignore the Delta version.

@eddy,

That's too complicated for me to try.

I finally gave up on installing that update so unhooked the PC, hooked up another win 10 PC and all of the win updates installed with no issues.

Requested a call back from Microsoft last evening.  A tech finally called me and even he couldn't install this update.  A level 2 tech is supposed to call me back on Tues.  Is it safe to use this computer without having this update installed?

Lets put it this way, before you even knew about this update (and the subsequent problem) you were happy. Whilst nothing has changed other than this particular update not installing, but some of the others in this cumulative update have. So in theory you are still better protected than when you were before.

As I and many others keep banging about you shouldn't be reliant on things always working and or getting infected; you have to have a robust backup and recovery strategy in place (regular hard drive image backups) to from any such emergency.

I haven't even attempted the latest patch Tuesday update, I have my Windows Update set to a limited paid bandwidth so it doesn't automatically download and install updates. I usually wait at least a week before manually updating and monitor such issues in the meantime.

Technically this win10 laptop is less well protected (in regard of these updates) than yours, but I'm still using it, reasonably secure in the knowledge I have my backup strategy in place. Speaking of which I'm just about to run my weekly drive image backup.
