I would love to help, but I am not sure what you mean, when you say "Process Explorer"
I'd encourage anyone who has the problem, and has appropriate technical skills, to help us analyze the issue. I still think Avast is kind of innocent in this (or, more precisely, its presence may work as a trigger for something else, but it's not Avast that is actively doing it). But I'd be happy to be proven wrong here.

To start, it would be good to use Process Explorer to get more info on the WMI Provider Host process instance. If you right-click the offending process in PE and select Properties, you should see the "WMI Providers" tab. What does the list on that page say? And also, if you go to the Threads tab, you should see which thread is taking the CPU, and you can even display its stack trace (assuming you have the debugging symbols properly configured in PE).

Thanks
Vlk

And another thing. I downgraded to Avast 2014.8.0.2021, but I still see a lot of CPU usage from the WMI Provider Host process

There have been many improvements in the lates version.
Downgrading isn't going to make things better.... it actually brings back the problems that have already been addressed in the latest version.

Yes, I am sure version 10 has made a lot of things better, but apparently not the WMI Provider problem... :(

This was on my Windows 10 partition not any different on Windows 8.1
If that's too much, maybe it's time to find out what else is going on ???

FWIW I decided to give Avast another shot after upgrading to Windows 10, but the problem still persist.

Oh well - back to AVG :-\

I have no clue what your problem might be but it isn't Avast:

Bob, my problem has been discussed at lengths in this thread - the title says it all :) I am happy for you, that you don't experience it, but saying that Avast isn't a problem just because you don't see it, seems to be jumping to conclusions.

This thread has been read 7.939 times as of now, which to me suggests, that I am not alone with this problem, no matter what is causing it.

BR,
Jesper

Reading the thread and having the problem are two different things.
I use Avast so my screenshot is valid. This doesn't mean that your problem isn't a problem.
Other things enter into the picture which can cause this. You may be running some other programs
that cause this problem or, using a program that conflicts with Avast that's causing this.
I simply posted a screenshot to show you that I use Avast, and I certainly don't have your problem.
IMHO, we need to look beyond simply saying this is an Avast problem.

"or, using a program that conflicts with Avast that's causing this."

That sounds like a good place to start.

I should mention that this was the 1st thread that popped up when I googled so if this has since been resolved please let me know.

So exactly what information do Avast need from us to fix this (Logs/reports)?

I do remember the constant CPU usage starting around the time I changed DNS from OpenDNS to Google servers.

--Install Avast with OpenDNS active, no problem--
--Change DNS with Avast installed, problem--

Makes sense that a reinstall would fix it for me on that evidence but if other users are getting this issue on clean installs?

I suggest you start your own topic and describe your problem.
resurrecting an old topic isn't a good idea.

Alan, to the best of my knowledge, the extensive CPU-usage problem still persists. I have not seen a solution described anywhere - despite the big interest in this issue. (Read 12356 times).

But I shall have to agree with Bob, that it would seem, that you are experiencing a different problem. I have heard or read nothing previously about  the problem in this thread being DNS-related. So, the right thing would probably be to create a new topic, like Bob suggests.
