Cant start up. Hangs at aswrvrt.sys
« on: January 23, 2015, 08:59:49 PM »
Hi,

My laptop is not starting up. I cant even start up in safe mode. It hangs at aswrvrt.sys. I have windows 7 and i think 64 bit.

I've seen that others have had the same problem and were suggested to open a new threat.

Please help!

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

1.  Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows 7 64bit RC  I will pm the link for this
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer.  First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

Windows 7 and Vista screenshots

When you reboot you will  see this.
 Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe  or  e:\frst.exe dependant on system
 and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

To me this sounds like you may need to re-install the OS.   What is your make and model of laptop ?

Unfortunately yes.  All data will be lost, if the recovery console had worked we could have saved something

This should reset your computer

Quote
The way to restore Gateways is to hold down the ALT Key and repeatedly hitting f10 then it should bring you to a boot sequence screen then choose the HDD and then hold down ALT and repeatedly hit f10 again that should prompt the restore feature for gateway

The reason im wanting to get back into this laptop is because my backup crashed! The only way to get back to family photo's and such is through this laptop.

Any other way???

You can try to use one of the various boot CDs and see if the machine will come up on it and then copy things off.
Basically, burn CD on other computer........go into BIOS on boot of bad PC and set boot sequence to DVD/CD......put boot CD in bay, reboot.......hopefully comes up, attach external USB HDD or stick and copy off files you need.
Boot sequence: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/bootorderchange.htm

.....but I think the ALT+F10 outlined also gives you boot sequence option.

You can even run A/V scan fron this....but I'd first get all your data off.

Scroll down to this section in the following thread :

If you cannot  Boot the computer

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

This will create a windows PE environment and you may be able to back up data from there

Whenever I see some of  the undoubtedly helpful 'solutions' being offered or suggested here my heart sinks. The reason being the assumption that everyone has another computer to be able to either get back onto this forum and or download the software which may help sort out the mess Avast may have caused. What about all those people who don't have this option? What are they going through trying sort these sorts of boot stall problems?

Perhaps when listing the system requirements Avast (and not them only I hasten to add) should include the necessity for a compatible backup computer in case things go wrong as well.

It is something I've long been suggesting on forums where people ask for advice buying their first PC of some sort, lists their requirements and budget. IT experts and others replying always go for a choice of machine that makes the most of that budget recommending the best value for money CPUs, best performing GPUs, HDDs, SSDs brands etc.

Rarely do they think of suggesting that the best advice for the first time buyer is actually to split their budget and buy two computers. That way when something goes wrong, and it will eventually, they have the ability to get on back online and get free help in forums like this.

The cheapest option of all is a small USB Hard drive and a free imaging programme.
