Avast 2015 scan option problem
« on: March 26, 2015, 08:11:04 PM »
On Windows 7 64 bit, the SCAN selection in Avast 2015  brings up  a list of scan options. When I select 'Scan for viruses' , the drop down menu only gives me the  'Boot-time scan' - nothing else. On my other Windows 7 pc (32 bit) with the same Avast version (2015.10.2.2215), several scan option are available including 'Full system scan' . I tried re installing to no avail.   Why the difference ?

did you run removal tool before reinstalling?   https://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

you may try reapir first
controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall/change > repair option .... wait a minute and reboot

Any other antivirus programs previously installed or bundled in when new?

https://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Use the specific vendor removal tool after uninstalling old a/v from Programs and Features (if not already done).  Reboot after uninstalling, reboot again after running the vendor tool.

Try a repair of avast.  Go to Programs and Features and select avast and click and choose repair.  Reboot.

If this does not work, see below:

You may need to run aswclear.exe after uninstalling avast! normally if things are not better after running singularlabs tool rebooting and running a repair.  Suggest getting fresh removal/install tools from avast before you remove/install.  All work is done off-line (disconnected from the Internet).

I used the little setup file (downloader & installer) to download and install Avast. Can I just bypass the download part(I'm on a limited monthly internet usage plan) and just reinstall (after a clean uninstall) the existing download file- from wherever the installer put it ? And, if so, where might that be ? I did try the Avast repair feature , but nothing changed.

Best course of action is to use a friends/family computer and save the resulting large file to an usb stick.  Then transfer these two files over to your system.

Be offline as you will have no protection without an antivirus on you system when you uninstall avast! using Programs and Features.  Be sure to place aswclear.exe on your administrator's desktop first after uninstalling avast, click that, and allow your system to reboot into Safe Mode.  Run aswclear.exe only in Safe Mode and choose the default settings.  Reboot.  Once back in administrator account, double-click the full avast file residing in the downloads folder and allow avast to fully install.  You should see avast perform a very quick scan when it is finished.  Reboot one more time.

Better now?

IMPORTANT:  Install this program beforehand to prevent usb malware infections from either friend or family:  http://www.mcshield.net/  Be sure it is up-to-date before beginning any usb transfers; use the updater function within the program to do so.

I'm having this same problem.  I've been using Avast Free for years on this computer (Windows 7 64-bit), with no other AV program installed.  This morning, I ran a Smart Scan with no problems, then was prompted to update to a newer version of Avast.  After the update, the only scan option available to me is Boot Time.  I tried repairing the program but that didn't make any difference.  Could there be a problem with the update?

as suggested above, try a new clean install
