« on: April 30, 2015, 11:20:29 AM »
After updating Avast Free it was necessary to restart my computer.
So I did.

Uninstall avast via add/remove and follow the instructions. Download it's removal tool from here https://www.avast.com/en-nz/uninstall-utility. Run it and the tool will tell that this tool will automatically run your computer in safe mode. Click ok on both and follow the instructions.

Next step is this:What previous antivirus did you have prior to installing Avast? Did you use it's removal tool? If not, download it's removal tool, turn your computer in safe mode, and run the tool.

Removal tool can be found here https://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

After that has been done. Install a fresh new copy of avast. Once installed it will do a quick start up scan. Once done, restart your computer manually and register your copy of avast.

Thanks Staticguy for your quick reply.

I have uninstalled Avast Free with the Avast uninstaller.

I don't know which previous (if any) antivir software was installed on this pc.

Can I run singularlabs unistaller without causing any problem?

There are 2 Java versions installed on the pc.
Do I have to uninstall the old version?

Best regards, Herman

You need to remember which previous antivirus software was installed previously prior to installing avast. On program files/ program files (x86) can you see an antivirus software folder by any chances i.e. Norton, McAfee, or etc. Windows 8.1 might be a bit different from program files/program files (x86). What do you mean by can you run singular uninstaller without causing any problems? That website provided to you list all antivirus removal tool. You just need to pick the previous antivirus removal tool and run it.

What two version of java do you have? The latest version is version 8 Update 45.

Just so you know that I am running Windows 7 SP1 and not Windows 8.1

Hi, I just removed Java v31. I still got the latest version 45 aboard.

Since I don't recall which AV program (if any) was installed previously I assume that I can download and install Avast Free? Right?
(I checked config sreen)

Did you go to your C drive and checked on both folders as I mentioned in my previous post. The folders are program files and program files (x86)? It should/may still have a folder of previous antivirus name

Ok that clears some things. Correct me if I am wrong. Your computer is a brand new computer and you didn't install any antivirus program such as Norton, McAfee, Trend-Micro, or etc. Windows 8.1 has a built in antivirus program called Windows Defender. You can't remove it.

Uh.. Hermie. I want you to run a tool it's called Farbar Recovery Scan Tool located here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0. ONLY RUN Farbar Recovery Scan Tool. It will produce two logs. After that post these two logs here and one experienced user will then assist you. I will let him know.

For this tool to work properly. Run the version of the tool that matches with your Windows 8. For example if your Windows 8.1 is a 32-bit you should download and run the 32-bit version of this tool

No other causes that I can see

Are you still getting this with Avast uninstalled ?

Could you re-install Avast and see if the problem recurs
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier

Hi @essexboy. I have downloaded and installed Avast Free version 2015.10.2.2218, virus version 150505-0.
I have not noticed message kmode exception not handled again.

Hi @bob3160. Thanks for your reply.

Strange: I was not notified by email about the replies from both @essexboy and @bob3160.

Any suggestions what to do next?
