Avast v 7 unable to update virus definitions
« on: September 19, 2015, 02:42:03 PM »
I'm using Avast v 7 on XPpro with no problems until this week. Avast is set to auto update the virus definitions every day, but now gives  this error message:-

'Not enough storage for this command' then aborts.

Why is this now happening, & how to fix it?

Thanks for any help.

Ditto, as above. "Not enough storage to process this command"....3GB RAM, more than 200GB HDD free space. Only solution that I found was to reinstall Avast free v7.0.1474

I know it is an old version and no longer supported (still gets VPS updates), but I wish to stick with it.

Is it something to do with the delivery of updates for this version? Streaming updates are fine.

If I remember correctly v7 or earlier will no longer receive any vps updates.
Only v8.0 or later will receive vps updates. I would suggest updating to at the very
least v2015.
Dell Inspiron, Win10x64--HP Envy Win10x64--Both systems Avast Free v17.9.2322, Comodo Firewall v8.2 w/D+, MalwareBytes v3.0, OpenDNS, Super Anti-Spyware, Spyware Blaster, MCShield, Unchecky, Vivaldi Browser and, various browser security tools.

After reinstalling v7.0.1474 as above I am still getting updates at present. latest 150919-0

I understand that v7 and v8 are no longer supported but will continue to receive vps updates....as per this announcement.

That is incorrect if my memory isn't failing me.

Old program versions aren't supported, e.g. they won't get any program updates, but the VPS updates should still be supported, as mentioned.

My friend has the same problem (Avast 7,Windows XP SP3), so he manually updates definitions.

That is one solution, but it is a fair size chunk to download (200MB +).....Reinstalling worked for me, I don't know if  the problem is caused by one particular update or not, but since reinstalling all is now OK again...Up to 150919-1 now.

I don't know why he should be hanging on to avast 7 when the OS can run the latest avast version.

Aside from the obvious if XP Pro SP3 can run the latest version, those helping on the forums have less and less experience of the older versions. So when you come to the forums it is harder to find someone to help find a solution.
