What IDS do you use?
« on: December 07, 2005, 09:15:39 AM »
Hello everybody.

Here is a nice survey of common IDS software:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/intrusion-detection-p2.htm

Some use the teatimer inside Spybot, some use the free WinPatrol. I for instance came to like the Russian System Safety Monitor, bit of a memory hog but a very good program. What is your favourite, and why that is?

greets,

SSM is respectably famous and considering the number of apps I normally use, I think I won't need too much time to configure it for my environment.  However, I cannot but think which is nuisance: The possibility of malware praying on my PC or the inevitable resource hog caused by the monitoring app.  At the same time, I have to admit that Kerio's Application Behavior Blocking function, which currently I am using, is far from being comprehensive. :(

SSM seems a good application, but for any reason, always a resource hog and incompatible with one of my other programs.
Sometimes is the firewall, sometimes a proxy filter...
ProcessGuard, PrevX, AntiHook weren't better.
I've changed my mind: now I want some space for userful applications for work... Security has a limit  :P

I never managed to get SSM version 2.0 to work properly and not having a help file to fall back on, it is now languishing in my Uninstalled Programs folder for the day when there may be a help file and support.

None.

Even no spyBot resident, am I the only one?

I update Spywareblaster periodically, that is all.
Sounds crazy if I have none or just normal.
Wish not my puter to get stuck with too much "security".
I do admit I use safe surfing and downloading habits.
I am old?

I use the paid for version of WinPatrol Plus 9.8. This program works very well for me. No problems on my pc with it since I have been using it.  :)

There is also IDS incorporated into A squared personal which has a screenshot here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17020.msg144673#msg144673
I found it ok for the trial period that i used it but not informative enough to give me confidence .In the instance of someone less careful would probably become so accustomed to accepting that bad stuff would still get through.

I use Spybot/Teatimer which seems to work good for me. I also have MS Antispyware which has found nothing yet.

Well, i installed WinPatrol 9.8.1 and uninstalled SpywareGuard.

I will see if I get into a same kind of popup hell that i used to get with SpyBot resident (Teatimer) when installing programs.
Never knew what to answer and sometimes programs would not work afterwards cause of that spybot resident.

This will be the same.
WinPatrol monitors services, startup items, browser helpers, etc.
If you trust in a program, better is disabling WinPatrol while installing it.
