I haven't found the default setting which enables Avast to scan all data stored on my external HDD.

I meant that recycle bin may be default excluded from scan

A word of caution about keeping a system clean(er):  http://antivirus.about.com/b/2007/03/11/clean-quarantine-or-delete.htm
Also, consider what happens when a system file is deleted (in this case Recycle Bin) where would you put your files you want to remove at a later time? 

In some cases, removal of something as simple as Notepad (which is a system file) may require a complete re-install of the operating system to get it back.

Thank you mchain for the weblink, I found the article interesting reading.

It's hard to keep a windows machine clean and up to date.
Time consuming too, therefore I switch over to my chromebook so now and then.

Since there's no protection on the Chromebook, you'll never know if you stumble upon an infection.
I guess that makes it OK
