Could you download the offline installer and then install over the existing current version using custom install?

If you use the offline installer then you need to do a custom install.
Or, use the update function in the GUI.
If you use the offline installer backup your avast settings then restore settings after the install.

GUI>Settings>General>scroll down to and make selection.

Safe zone is very important. However I would have liked its "pay mode" enabled by default. It is useless against key loggers and screen capture viruses without "Pay Mode" on.

And make sure you disabled automatic program upgrades since your choice apparently gets ignored on them.
Only on the first upgrade where the new function/module was introduced. It should keep the setting after that.
