https://blog.avast.com/2015/05/06/support-for-older-avast-windows-consumer-version-will-end/

Support for old versions has stopped, however I've not seen any statement that vps updates have stopped for them though.

There was (still is?) a problem with the updates starting at 31 march.
Although avast said the problem was fixedm it looks like there still is something wrong.
https://www.avast.com/virus-update-history

I know Android devices do not get updates, perhaps old versions of avast have the same problem.

But using 4.8 on a X64 system ?
Come on, get it over and done with and install the latest 2016 version.
Ok, thanks for the info...  Hopefully the developers will see this thread and fix the problem.

Did you try the avast Repair as suggested ?
I did one better.  I installed it brand new on a seperate computer.  It updated to database 160331-2. which is March 31, 2016.  So this is not a problem on my end.

As has been mentioned it would appear to be the last VPS update - which I found hard to believe - if it hasn't moved forward from that date.

There have been numerous deadlines for end of support for win9.5/9.8, etc. and they used avast 4.9. However, many business systems still used avast 4.8 and this inadvertently meant avast 4.8 (and the 95/98 OSes) support continued.

As an avast user like yourself, I have no knowledge if this is the end of support for avast 4.8 or not.

Is there a way to send a message to the developers to get a straightforward answer on this?

What OS do you run?
Windows XP X64 SP2.

First you need to download and install SP3. After installing SP3 check again for any available updates. After that download avast uninstall utility, but don't run it. Uninstall your current version of avast and follow the instructions. After that disconnect your computer from the internet. Manually run your computer in windows safe mode and run the avast uninstall utility and follow the instructions. After that download and install the latest version of Avast (using custom installation and untick any unnecessary optional program you don't need (it is located at the bottom) . After that a pop up window will appear saying what's new in the version (at the bottom left hand corner make sure you untick google chrome only if you don't want it) and click on finish. After that Avast GUI will appear and it will say finishing installing and after that close the AVAST GUI and restart your computer manually. After register register your copy of avast.

Note: Registration is FREE and you will only need to register once every year.

Thanks!
SP3 does NOT exist for XP x64. That thing was based on 64bit Server 2003 and was pretty much a dead end from the very beginning.
Correct, but I wouldn't call it a "dead end"...  It was being updated up until a few months ago.  XP x86 will keep getting updates until 2019.

Windows Embedded POSReady 2009. This product for point-of-sale devices reflects the updates available in Windows Embedded Standard 2009. It was originally released in 2009, and extended support will end on April 9, 2019
It's an open secret that POSReady updates work perfectly fine on plain old XP.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is based on Windows server 2003 but it has some client functions of Windows XP for consumers.

Windows XP 64-bit Edition is based a consumer version based on Windows XP 32 bit but altered so that it supports the Itanium architecture.

While I use Avast on some of my operating systems, on others I use a different anti-virus program.

I have noticed that virus updates on my other anti-virus programs are quicker than usual lately:  This suggests there have not been many new definitions

You're on borrowed time with 4.8, I thought it was supposed to have ended a year or 2 ago.
