Win95:matyas and Win 32:ctx
« on: December 02, 2003, 07:53:45 PM »
On a scale of 1/10, I'm probably a novice in computer literacy, and I'm confused.
I ran a scan because my quick start icons disappeared from taskbar and the scan revealed 3 viruses;
Win95:Matyas
Win32:ctx (appears to be in two separate files).
I wasn't able to repair, thus sent to quarantine. Reran the scan with an indication of another Win32:ctx virus, tried to repair again and received a notice that an error occurred during processing. I then noticed on that sheet that it had 347 lines listed, and all after the first line show "unable to scan".
My confusion lays with the fact that I thought Avast would not allow my system to be hit with a virus or if one slipped by, then I would have thought it could be repaired.
What needs to be done to rid my system of these, and just as importantly, protect my system against a future virus ?

Please send those file in the chest to us (right-click on the chest item and choose Mail to Alwil). It might not be infected files in fact. Panda antivirus has not-encrypted virus strings in their database and Avast finds some of them. If you have Panda on your computer, it's probably Panda's virus database.

I just downloaded version 4 and I too have got the Win32:CTX virus.
Where do I get the tool to remove this bug since my version will not repair this as I also get an error when I try to have Avast repair the file.
Also what version virus is this? Avast doesn't give any information or version of the virus.

Hi,
where exactly was the virus found ?
(Full pathname and filename and file-extension, see avast's report/log-files)

which Win do you have ? which ServicePacks/Updates ?
do other Scanners (e.g. KAV, Trendmicro, RAV Onliescanners) also find an infection in the file/PC ?

you might search on VGREP (see below) for the exact variant and removal instructions..

 ;)

I'm using Windows XP Home with service pack 1 and I have all the latest critical updates installed.
My Avast shows the CTX virus in this file: imscan.dll C:\Windows\system32
I have put this file in the Virus Chest and my system shows no other infected files when I run Avast again.
If I open my Virus Chest to show all chest files I show these files: kernal 32.dll C:\Windows\system32
winsock.dll C:\Windows\system32
wsock.dll C:\Windows\system32
A couple of weeks ago I tried to do a virus scan through PC Pitstop but was unable to because of a security setting on my computer.
I haven't tried any other virus scans.

Hi,
that's a harmless false alarm in left-over files from Panda-OnlineScanner
--> you need not do anything else

P.S.: the files in the chest you mention are system-files backups: DON't delete them!!
the infected files in the chest you find by chosing a different panel/button ("infected files" who'd have thought it.. ;D )
