FF 1.5 & JRE 1.5.0_06 incompatible ?
« on: January 21, 2006, 09:35:14 AM »
:)  Had someone on another forum post a request for help :
"Firefox had been working perfectly until a couple of days ago, I think when I installed Java on it. Now, it doesn't want to load any pages at all, and also I can't quit it at all. Firefox.exe stays in the "processes" in my PC, and I can't even end the process manually. "

   Are Firefox 1.5 & Sun Java's JRE 1.5.0_06 incompatible ?

I've had all sorts of problems with Firefox 1.5 installing it ontop of an existing installation. I recommend, uninstalling ALL versions of Firefox and redownloading it and reinstalling it. It works fine with that version of Java but has some massive memory leaks with certain Java content (not a fault of Java and different versions will not help). It has to be fixed in Firefox.

Hi FwF,

This is the main reason that I switched to Flock. Comparing Flock to Firefox, I think as soon as Flock becomes operational as a public version, I will abandon Firefox. I block script on Firefox and Flock, and only allow it for trusted sites, and I like in-browser pre-hyperlink scanning. But people are not aware the real danger lies in remote links offered. For instance people get an e-card, they click the remote link and they are without proper protection against hostile code inside funny gadgets etc. A scenario malware artists and hackers love, pre-scanning links helps you there considerably.

I have no problems whatsoever, but one of my friends reported that problem. I will call and ask him to join and post.

I've been using Firefox 1.5 and Java 5.0.6 since they came out, with no problem.

The <applet> tag support box for Mozilla and Netscape was unticked.

Quote
By using the latest Java Plug-in with APPLET tag support, you can help to ensure that clients running your applets will have the latest Java 2 Platform.

Q: Can I continue to use OBJECT tags to call my applets?

A: Yes. Even though the Java Plug-in has been enhanced to support APPLET tags, it is fully backward compatible with existing web pages that use OBJECT tags to launch applets. Moreover, the JRE/Java Plug-in continues to ship with the HTML Converter for those developers who want to invoke their applets using OBJECT rather than APPLET tags.

Applet tags are a way of calling Java apps. I have mucked about with different calling tags for Java in the past, but to tell the truth, I'm far from an expert.

I'd guess that if you visit a page that uses <applet> tags, you'll need to have the box checked.

Having that box unticked certainly hasn't been a source of problems on my machine.

Regards to all,

The problem is not Java but the failure to do a clean install.

Cleaned Registry of FF entries I then uninstalled Sun Java VM Reg clean Java
Reinstalled FF Reboot/ reinstalled Java (jre1.5.0_060) still the same result

Are you using Windows XP? And are you using an Administrator account?

I have the same error when trying to tick the box for Mozilla/Netscape.

However, Java has been working fine in Firefox.

I will try testing a page which uses the <applet> tag and see if there is any problem.

I used the test page and all is A-OK (saw the dancing Duke) ... but then, I am using updated IE6 and did a Java update last week.    :)
